The Meadow

Rin sat in the middle of her favorite meadow, her finger caressing the nearest grass blades. A light wind blows her hair behind her, and she looks out onto the rest of the meadow, imagining the unexpecting Kikyo waiting for InuYasha on that faithful day.

This was the very meadow where Naraku's evil plot took place, and even after Kagome told her, Rin still felt drawn to it. Despite it's history, there was a peace that Rin found comforting here, ever since her 12th birthday, when Sesshomaru failed to return. Laying down in the soft grass, Rin closes her eyes, remembering the day clearly.

She woke up with a smile on her face. It had been so long since Sesshomaru visited-about five months now-and he was sure to visit today. As she followed behind Kaede, helping the villagers with different medical needs, each wished her a happy birthday.

After the long day, she was given a small birthday celebration dinner, with all of her favorite food. InuYasha and Kagome, Miroku and Sango, even Kohaku and Shippo stopped by to wish her a happy birthday. They all began to leave as the sun went down. InuYasha and Kagome were the last ones at the house.

"Did Sesshomaru come by yet?" InuYasha asked to no one in particular.

"Sesshomaru-sama hasn't been to the village in a couple of months. I thought he would have come by but I guess he had other plans." Kaede said, gathering the dishes.

"That's strange, even for him." Kagome wondered.

Rin nodded her head. "His visits have been getting shorter and farther apart. I hardly see him anymore."

"Well he probably just forgot about you. You're only a human to him." InuYasha said casually, leaning against the frame of the door.

"InuYasha, sit."

He faceplants into the ground, growling before picking himself back up.

"We will see you guys tomorrow! Again, happy birthday Rin!" Kagome said, smiling and dragging InuYasha behind her by his ear.

Rin sighed. "I guess he's not coming."

"Don't worry about him, Rin. He still cares for ye. Now go on, get some rest."

It was the middle of the night when Rin felt a light touch on her cheek. She rustled in her sleep a bit before opening one eye. The flap of the door was just closing, a strand of silver hair barely escaping into the night without being seen.

Rin jumped out of her mat, and just before she reached the door, she noticed a wooden box on the floor with a crescent moon on top. She picked it up, rubbing her hand over the moon before opening the box. Inside was a necklace, with a delicate chain and a golden crescent moon pendent. Rin gasped, taking the necklace out the box and putting it on.
She ran out, calling his name.

"Sesshomaru-sama! Sesshomaru-sama!"

No answer. No one was there. She turned around and looked for him in all directions. She ran up the hill to the meadow next to the village. No sign of him. He was gone.

Rin looked down, a lone tear falling down her cheek but a smile on her face. She grasped the pendant in her hand.

Rin opens her eyes. She sits up, noticing that the wind had picked up speed. She grabs her basket of herbs she helped pick with Kagome earlier that day, along with flowers for Kaede, and turns towards the village. She takes a few steps forward before stopping, feeling a presence in the forest watching her.

"I know you are there."

"And I know who you are. You've never tried to hurt me before, yet you stay hidden in the trees. What are you so afraid of?"

Only the wind carried her response and Rin continues down the hill. A pair of golden eyes watches her before vanishing in the trees.
