Slavery is the most obvious and most obscene embodiment of our grotesque 'caste system.' It is unmistakably a sin that we allow intelligent, feeling human beings to be owned by and subject to the utterly irresponsible power of other humans. In some parts of the empire a man can be fined less than fifty desseks for killing one of his slaves, and only then if it is done on public property. How can anything so primitive and callous be allowed to continue? The reason is obvious of course. The wealthy senators who write our laws and their brethren own more than eighty percent of the empire's slaves.
