After a twenty minute drive to the city, we pulled into a mall parking lot. I recognized it clearly. In our first foster home, the mother had taken Levi and I here to buy some pajamas. I remember picking out a pair with piglet on it.
"What store do you want to go to first?"
"Gordmans, they have cute bedding."
I walked down the isles of fancy throw pillows. I spotted one with piglet on it and threw it into the cart just for old times sake.
My eyes settled on a black fur comforter set. It had black silky sheets to match it. I sorted through the shelf of them and found the last full size. It's perfect.
"Mommy." I heard a small voice off to the side of me.
I turned to my left and there was a little brunette girl tugging on her mother's shirt. She was peeking at me while hiding her face in her mom's legs. "She took it mommy." She mumbled into her leg.
"It's okay." The mother consoled her, smoothing out her hair.
I smiled at the little girl and her mother. "Did you want this?" I crouched down in front of her, holding the large plastic bag that contained the bed set.
The little girl said nothing, instead she looked terrified.
Such a sweet innocence.
I looked up at Levi who looked like he was feeling very awkward. "You can have it." I spoke quietly to the girl.
The mother nudged the girl a little and she lifted her eyes towards me. "Are you sure?" she sniffled, her chest puffing up as she did.
"It's yours, besides, I can settle for the grey one." I shrugged and grinned at her.
Her eyes lit up and her mouth broke into a little smile. She looked up at her mother as if confirming it was okay to take from me. The woman gave her a small nod.
The little girl reached out her arms and tried to steady herself as she took the large bag from me. "Thank you!"
"You're welcome." I smiled, deeply happy with her happiness. "Can I ask you something though?"
The girl looked naturally curious as she nodded eagerly. "Why do you want the black one?" She looked to be no older than eight, most girls that age want pretty colors.
"I want a black, pink, and white room." She hopped a little as she spoke. She was obviously excited to decorate her room.
"That sounds cool. I'm sure it will look pretty."
"Thank you." The mother smiled and looked at Levi. "Your girlfriend is a keeper."
Levi's face fumed red and I tried to bite back my laughter. "He's my brother." I intervened, standing back up and reaching for the grey bedding. "Oh my mistake." The mother said kindly before walking away.
I tossed the bag in our cart and continued on.
"That was nice of you." Levi spoke up after walking in silence.
"It was just common courtesy." I shrugged.
We were finally headed for home after I bought quite a few things for my room and for the living room.
For my room, I found a little black chandelier styled lamp. Some deep purple and blue decorative pillows. A blue rug, some black curtains, and a little black cat figurine. I bought some dark purple paint for the walls, and a light purple for the little window room.
For the living room, I picked out a light brown couch cover. A couple decorative pictures of flowers for the walls. Some bright throw pillows, and some pale blue paint for the walls. It would hopefully look a bit more spruced up once done.
"Do you want to stop for something to eat?" Levi asked, breaking the silence in the car.
"Yeah why not?" I shrugged as he turned down a familiar road. "Fazolis?" I laughed, knowing this road headed there.
"Of course."
We took a seat in a back booth. I ordered the chicken penne and he ordered fettuccine alfredo.
The waiter brought us a basket of bread sticks while we waited.
"So how was your last day with Mary?" He was referring to my most recent foster home.
"It was just like the last day at every other home." I shrugged, knowing he knows how the last days always feel. It's a slight bit of heart break if you're leaving a home you like, and a slight bit of relief if you're leaving a home you hate. And if you're going into a new home, there's a bit of dread because you never know if you'll enjoy it more or less than the last.
Levi didn't seem like he wanted to say more and my attention was pulled away from him when the restaurant door opened.
My heart stopped as I watched a tall man walk in wearing a black hoodie. The way he hung his head low, made me sweat. His hands were tucked securely into his pockets and my arms went weak. My heart sped up and I choked as I tried to take a breath.
"Whit, are you alright?" Levi took my hand that was limp on the table.
The room was spinning as I tried to focus on his face. "Whitney!" He shot up and bolted to my side of the table.
I turned to look at the man. He was already looking at me.
He started towards us and my chest felt tight as I tried to push through Levi.
I'd give anything to be at home.
"I'm a doctor, what's going on?"
Everything sped up for a moment as Levi moved and the man hurried to my side, kneeling next to the booth.
He reached his hand up to my neck and I begun shaking involuntarily.
"Her pulse is racy." He flipped his hood back and I saw the color of a blue scrubs shirt. His head was bald and his eyes were full of concern.
My breathing slowed and I heaved on much needed air.
"Do you have a history of anxiety?" He asked and I nodded.
"She was having a panic attack." He said, facing Levi. "Can you get me some paper towel wet with cold water?" He asked a waitress that was standing by. She nodded and hurried off. "I want you to put that on your face and go home to get some sleep." He ordered.
I nodded slowly, pushing myself up from the booth.
