Chapter Six
Alexei wished that they were in a different situation. He realized that somehow, Jewel was opening her feelings unto to him. It made him ten feet taller learning that she did indeed felt something else than indifference between them.
It meant that he had a chance to change her mind regarding her vendetta against the boss. Even if she hasn't confessed, deep inside he knew that she was trying to kill Maxim for revenge. A good person like Jewel didn't kill just for nothing. He figured out that the death of her mother might be the key.
"I promise we'll get out of here alive Jewel." He kissed her forehead.
Jewel nodded silently.
Alexei distanced himself from her and sighed. He had been in difficult predicaments before. But none of those could assimilate to the tension he felt as of the moment with Jewel. He dreaded that she may be put in harm's way.
He examined their surroundings. So far, their pursuers haven't caught up with them. He had stealthily hid them in an abandoned garage. He pulled her closer and ducked their head as he caught a glimpse of a vehicle passing by. He couldn't be sure if it was the same car that was following them.
He noticed the small trembles in her body. He decided to break the silence between them. "What did you want me to know?"
She raised her head. "I... Kind of forgot."
Alexei observed the slight falter in her tone. He perceived that the reason why she lied was either she was embarrassed or still in shock.
"Angel..." He pressed on.
She took a deep breath. She clasped her hands together and arranged herself in her seat. When she was comfortable with her position, she looked at him solemnly. "I was raised in a small town by my mom. All my life, I believed that it was only the two of us. She said that my dad died in a car crash when I was an infant. My mother didn't talk about him too much, but I was aware of his love for both of us. My mom would light up and then break down to cry whenever I mention him so I didn't probed much about his life."
"It's my first heart break in regards to love. I realized that I didn't want to fall too deep in love because I didn't want to have the same fate as my mom." She smiled cynically. "I tried to push her to find someone else but mom always said that loving my father was enough for her lifetime."
Then her smile faded into a frown. "She was a very strong woman Alexei. It never occurred to me that she could die so early." She twisted her hands and paused. "I know accidents happen all the time. I've read the police report regarding her accident. It was unfortunate she suffered such horrible death. But then..." She closed her eyes. "But when I unexpectedly read her letters, I was rendered speechless."
Alexei silence ushered her to continue.
"The letters were from a man who claimed to be my grandfather. His letters were addressed to my mother. Apparently, she was disowned by her family after my father's death. She had run away with me when I was just two at my father's funeral. It stated that if my mother doesn't come back, there would be huge price to pay."
He nodded. "Did your mother completely ignore all the letters? Did it state whom it came from?"
"They were all from the same man--my grandfather-- Maxim de Luca." She stated in a matter of a fact without any hesitation.
Alexei couldn't decide whether to simply laugh or be flabbergasted at her remarks. It was outrageous. Jewel was the granddaughter of the powerful Maxim de Luca. He wondered if he was aware of it or did he simply planned everything? He shook his head. It didn't make any sense though. Why would the boss allow her granddaughter to act haughtily? It seemed so farfetched.
After a few moments of silence, Jewel looked at him grimly. "Alexei... Please say something."
"Sorry. I was rendered speechless with your confessions moy angel."
"I understand. It took me a few days before the thought fully sank in my head."
"But why revenge moy milaya? If your are his granddaughter then you must--"
She shook her head. "He can't know Alexei. From all the letters he sent my mother, I concluded that he didn't want her to come back. He stated that he won't welcome her back with open arms and that she should be prepared for the consequences of leaving the family."
He frowned. "That doesn't sound like the Maxim I know moy angel. He's a ruthless man but he isn't brutal."
"I have all the letters in my safety deposit box. You can read it if you're doubting me Alexei."
"I'm not doubting you Jewel. I'm just confused why he would say those things to your mother especially if she is the only flesh and blood of his. It's not in his character."
She looked grim as she stared at his face. "Blood may be thicker than water. But that doesn't mean that family sticks together. He was the cause of my mother's death. The letters he sent to her told me so. And I can't forgive him for that."
"Moy angel." His suave voice pleaded. "Try to keep calm."
She shook her head. "I can't let my mother's accident be buried in vain. We we're living a simple life. We didn't need anything from him-- and yet he still held grudge against my mother."
Maxim pinched the bridge of his nose. He suddenly developed a painful headache. "Milaya... I- I'll talk to Maxim. I'll get to the bottom of this."
"This is my battle Alexei. Stay out of it."
"It has been my battle as well moy angel. Everything that can concerns you is my problem. I can't let you ruin yourself just for the sake of avenging your dead mother. I will help you bring justice in her death but I will not allow you to be killed or kill someone else. You are not a murderer." He held her hands tightly. "Promise me Jewel. You will trust me in helping you."
Jewel looked straight in his eyes and nodded.
Alexei sighed deeply. A thorn slightly removed from his chest. Now, he needed to escape this predicament and talk to Maxim. He believed the old man couldn't kill his only daughter and her granddaughter. He had known the man for at least a decade and it wasn't in his character. Someone must be setting him up for the blame. Nevertheless, if he accepted everything... He shook his head. No, he shouldn't plant a seed of doubt. He needed solid evidence before he would judge the old man's actions.
After a while, he looked back at the rear view mirror and started the engine. "Put on your seatbealt moy angel." He drove in reverse and exited on the highway.
They had been driving for a few minutes when suddenly the black sedan earlier popped up. The car bumped their making them swivel. Alexei maneuvered the wheels trying to avoid crashing their car in to the cliff. Unfortunately, he miscalculated the next turn.
He quickly removed Jewel's seatbelt. "You need to jump moy angel. We're gonna crash."
Panic settled in the pit of her stomach. "Alexei... What about--"
Before she could continue, he had opened her door and shoved her body out of the car. The car malfunctioned and went straight to the cliff. He braced for impact.
"Alexei!!" Jewel's high-pitched scream echoed as everything collapsed around him. He hoped that she would get to safety. He won't die. He promised to himself as the car crashed.
