“So, Gideon finally left Jude’s house long enough to remember us?” I asked as I walked up to Sonnet in the parking lot.

“Apparently. He texted me and said he’s inside and to the right,” she said.

I followed her into the restaurant and, sure enough, Gideon was sitting at a table. He smiled as we approached him. But I could see that it was a sad smile, and guilt was in his eyes.

“I’m really sorry guys. I always said I wouldn’t forget my friends if I got in a relationship, but I’ve been ignoring you lately. I feel absolutely awful about it,” he said honestly. “I promise it won’t happen again.”

It had been a month since Gideon and Jude had started dating. Jude had slowly been pulling Gideon away from us, just like I knew he would.

I had been spending more and more time with Ethan and Sonnet. It hurt to watch myself lose Gideon to Jude, so I tried to distract myself from the thought of it. Besides, being with Ethan always cheered me up.

“It’s alright Gideon,” I said quietly.

“No, it’s not alright. Because you have been ditching us lately. I know that you’re in love with Jude or whatever, but you can’t just ditch your friends for one person,” Sonnet said, her voice firm.

“I know, and I feel terrible about it. But I swear it won’t happen again,” Gideon said, his eyes pleading with us to forgive him. “I just got caught up in the relationship. You know I would never ditch you two. You’re my best friends and I love you guys.”

“We forgive you for now. But don’t you dare do it again,” Sonnet said sternly.

“I won’t,” Gideon said, relief entering his eyes.

“I have to use the bathroom. Order for me,” Sonnet said, getting up and disappearing around the corner.

“Hey Gideon…have you slept with Jude?” I asked before I could stop myself.

Gideon blushed. “Well, yea. We haven’t been dating that long, but we’ve been talking for years. We’ve had sex a few times,” he said.

“Oh,” I said, trying to keep casual. But inside, my heart was aching like crazy. He had actually slept with Jude.

“So what’s between you and Ethan?” he asked curiously.

I shrugged. “We’re just friends,” I said, wondering if that was actually true. I still didn’t know exactly how I felt about Ethan.

A waitress came and we read off our orders, also ordering for Sonnet. When the waitress was gone, Gideon turned his attention back to me, his expression deadly serious.

“I am so sorry I haven’t been hanging out with you much lately Greyson. You know you’re my best friend and I’d die for you. I’ve been such an asshole lately, and I can’t stand it. I swear to god I’ll never ditch you, or Sonnet, again. I care about you too much,” he said.

“Gideon, you mean everything to me. You could try to murder me and I would still forgive you,” I said.

“I’m glad I have you as a best friend, Greyson,” he said with a wide smile.
