eight // how long will i be waiting?

Start from the beginning

Tyler raised his eyebrows. "Really because that certainty doesn't sound like the Josh I know? He hates talking to anybody let alone new people. He, however, has seemed to take a liking to you."

My cheeks began to heat up from embarrassment, but not because of Tyler's comment, but because it was apparently obvious that Josh had decided I was worthy of getting to know. My friends were known to make comments about me and guys that I talked to. Garrett didn't seem to mind it, but I was afraid he was going to say something about Josh and I being too close or something.

I sighed, heavily, throwing my hands up in the air and turning towards Tyler. "If you want to get answers, maybe you should ask Josh instead of questioning me. Now, will you please just leave me in peace? This assignment is due by the end of class."

Tyler seemed taken back by my sudden outburst, but took the hint. He stood up, abandoning the computer that had just now turned on. His spot was quickly taken by a kid named Gerald, who was in charge of the graphics for the yearbook.

The rest of the class, I couldn't focus on anything, so my assignment turned out to be very sloppy, but it didn't matter to me.

Tyler didn't speak another word to me and refused to make eye contact as we both hurried down the hallway towards the lunch room. I didn't want him to think I was angry or fed up with him. I just didn't want to be asked questions that I either couldn't answer or ones that I shouldn't be answering because it wasn't my place to.

If he was angry at me, he would get over it eventually. He had nothing to be angry at me for.

"Earth to Chicago!"

My surroundings came back into focus and I found myself in the lunch line with Lilac staring at me, waiting for a response.

"Sorry," I remarked as the line moved forward. "What did you say?"

"I asked you why one of the new kids was sitting at our table." Lilac pointed to our regular table. "Aiden's awkwardly keeping him company."

I followed her finger to where to was pointing and she was right. It looked like Josh was trying to make conversation, but Aiden didn't know what to say.

"The new kid's name is Joshua and he asked me if he could sit with us today. His best friend is dating Elodie and he needs a break from them."

I grabbed a tray off of the rack which was actually quite stupid because I didn't need one. All I ate at lunch was a cup of yogurt and sometimes a cheese stick, but not very often. My hand latched onto the familiar container of strawberry banana yogurt and sat it down onto the red tray that was in my hands.

The lunch line was always separated into two parts when we got closer to the checkout and it made everything go so much faster.

I quickly paid for my stuff and hurried to the lunch table. Aiden's hat was pulled farther than usual over his light brown hair and Josh seemed quite uncomfortable.

"Oh, hey, Chicago," Aiden remarked, glancing up. "I'm so glad you are here!"

I smiled, sitting down in between him and Josh. "I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you that Joshua is sitting with us today." I turned towards Josh. "Joshua, this is Aiden."

Before Josh could respond, Lilac and Kailyn came and sat down, looking in his direction. "Who is this?" Kailyn asked.

She was studying him intently and I knew it was because she thought he was attractive.

"I'm Josh," the blue-haired boy replied. "It's nice to meet you."

Everybody seem to get along with Josh. However, Aiden was slightly awkward towards him, but I couldn't blame him. He hated being introduced to new people out of the blue.

"I'm going to take my tray up," he remarked. "Then I have to use the bathroom."

Aiden glanced at me before standing up and hurrying off.

"Does he always announce when he has to use the bathroom?" Josh asked out of plain curiosity.

Kailyn, Lilac, and I shared a look before I spoke. "He's just very open with us."

Aiden came back and grabbed his backpack off of the ground, throwing it upon the table. The button snapped open and all of the contents spilled out.

Aiden and I both gasped and reached forward to grab the one object that really mattered. My hand made contact with the box, but Aiden shoved my hand away, stuffing it back into his backpack.

"Um, Aiden?" Josh asked. "Why do you have a box of pads?"

Aiden's cheeks heated up as he tossed his backpack onto his shoulder. "I was born a girl. Chicago, come on!"

He pulled me out of my seat and we ran as fast as we could out of the cafeteria.

A/N: Sorry for the long wait. I've been very focused on working on Dementophobia recently.
