The Play

The snow fell around me as I got out of my car and headed towards the school. I didn't necessarily want to come to the school play but needed the extra credit my English teacher was going to offer me. I paid for my ticket and took a seat on the far left, second to last row. I pulled out my calculus book and worked on an assignment while I waited for the show to begin. I had nearly finished the problem I was working on when I felt someone next to me.

"Is this seat taken?" I heard his deep voice ask. I looked up and saw Jay, pointing to the seat next to me.

"Uh, no. It's not." I looked at him with confusion.

"Then you don't mind if I sit here?" Jay asked as he hopped over the seat from behind so he didn't have to climb over me to get to it.

"Guess not." I mumbled and went back to my homework, feeling much more distracted with him sitting next to me.

"Are you mad at me?" He suddenly asked. I rolled my eyes before looking at him and giving him a fake smile.

"Of course not. Who could be angry at such a golden boy as yourself?"

"Why don't you just tell me what I did wrong?"

"You totally bailed on our plans last Friday night."

"What? We didn't have plans then. We have plans this Friday night, if that's what you're talking about."

"No, your text said last Friday."

"Well I meant this Friday. I bought tickets for us to go to a movie that night. I wouldn't just bail on you, Maddy. I really like you and don't want to screw this up."

"Wait, you actually like me?" I asked a bit shocked.

"Isn't it obvious? I sit by you in all the classes we have together and always say hi to you when I see you. I even went into your work three times in one day just to talk to you. How have you not figured it out yet?" He said in exasperation.

"I just thought you pitied me or something. I didn't think someone like you could actually like someone like me."

Jay sighed and moved the armrest between us so that it wasn't down anymore and slid over in his seat slightly towards me. "I do like you so you're going to have to accept me and all of my flaws since you are so beyond perfect." He joked and laid his arm across my shoulders, pulling me in a bit closer to him.

"Jay, if this is a joke I swear I'm gonna-" My threat was stopped by him lifting my face to his and kissing me right on the lips. I melted into the kiss as my eyes slowly drifted shut.

"It's not a joke," he breathed as he searched my eyes.

"Okay," I whispered as the lights in the auditorium dimmed and the stage curtains began to part.
