The End as We Know It

Chapter 31- Rachel Stark

"A pant suit? Really, Fury?" I ask, kinda mad.

"Well, since you just got shot, I've made the executive decision to escort you to the sidelines. You are sitting this one out." he says. I give a low grunt, but walk away, knowing he is right. I quickly change and throw my hair up into a bun, so the face mask won't read my hair.

Steve's POV

Once I steal my uniform, we head towards the Triskellion. I stole my old 40's uniform. Hopefully Bucky will recognize me as me, not a threat.

We sneak in easily. No wonder HYDRA has been growing in S.H.I.E.L.D. We head up to the control room. I am worried about Rachel. She's probably right next to Pierce. Once we reach the control room, a worker opens it and looks up, frazzled.

"Excuse us." I say, hearing Maria's gun cock. The workers put their hands up and run out. I walk over to the mic, clear my throat and press the button. Here we go.

"Attention all S.H.I E.L.D. agents, this is Steve Rogers. You've heard a lot about me over the last few days. Some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time you know the truth. S.H.I.E.L.D. is not what we thought it was. It's been taken over by HYDRA. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The S.T.R.I.K.E. and Insight crew are HYDRA as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want. Absolute control. They shot Nick Fury. And it won't end there. If you launch those helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot. But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not." I switch the mic off and step back. I take a deep breath.

"Did you write that down first, or was it off the top of your head?" I crack a smile towards Sam and run out. We work our way down to the launch pads.

"They're initiating launch." Maria says through the coms.

"Hey Cap, how do we know the good guys from the bad guys?" Sam asks. I chuckle.

"If they are shooting you, they are bad." I say and Sam flies off. On the ground, I take out guys left and right.

"Hey Cap!" Sam says through the coms. "I found those bad guys you were talking about."

"You okay?" I ask Sam.

"I'm not dead yet."

Rachel's POV

I see the ships go up into the air. No one is stopping this? Are there any true S.H.I.E.L.D agents left? I can only imagine what is going down downstairs.

"They are initiating launch." I hear Maria state over the coms. I so want to be in the field right now.

"Hey Cap!" I hear Sam say  in the com. "I found those bad guys you were talking about."

"You okay?" I hear Steve say.

"I'm not dead yet." Sam states. I wish I could say something back. But since I'm in a room with the head of HYDRA, I decided against saying anything. Pierce is looking out the window, phone in his hand. I see all of the explosions. Sam. Pierce walks back towards us.

"Let me ask you a question," Pierce asks, guns pointed at all of us. After Steve's speech, a ton of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents flowed into the room. They are probably all HYDRA that have been in S.H.I.E.L.D for years. "What if Pakistan marched into Mumbai tomorrow and you knew that they were going to drag your daughters into a soccer stadium for execution, and you could just stop it, with a flick of the switch. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't all of you?" he asks, handing one of the councilmen a drink. The councilman cautiously takes it.

"Not if it was your switch." he says, throwing the glass across the room. Pierce chuckles and looks towards a guard who hands him a gun. He points it at the councilman, ready to shoot. I quickly kick the man out of the way. I grab the gun and disarm Pierce. I throw a miniature Widow's bite onto one of the guards. I throw the gun at the throat of the guard who was standing behind me. I quickly take out the three other guards. I grab the last guy's gun and slowly stand up, pointing it a Pierce.

"I'm sorry," I say as my voice concealer cracks. I pull my wig off and tap the button on the mask to reveal my real face. "Did I step on your moment?"

Steve's POV

"Falcon, status?" Maria asks over the coms.

"Engaging." he says in reply. I keep fighting off the men on the ground.

"All right, Cap. I'm in." I hear Sam say. I keep fighting. All I can think about is Rachel. She can't possibly be safe in this mess.

My thoughts are interrupted by Maria

"Eight minutes Cap."

"Working on it." I say back.

Rachel POV

One of the other councilmen has a gun pointed at Pierce while I am back by the computer. I glance up from my hack, looking at all of the destruction that is happening to the organization that once saved my life. My brother's life. Steve's life. I look back to the computer, unable to watch.

"What are you doing?" the eldest council member asks.

"She's disabling security protocols and dumping all the secrets onto the internet." Pierce answers.

"Including HYDRA's" I say.

"And S.H.I.E.L.D's." Pierce says, looking at me. "If you do this, none of your past is gonna remain hidden. Are you sure you're ready for the world to see you as you really are? A weak, damaged little girl who doesn't have a life outside of S.H.I.E.L.D."

"Are you?"I ask. I keep typing. I hear everything that is happening thanks to the coms. I hear Sam and Steve disable two helicarriers. Once I complete my hack, I need to members to confirm what I'm doing.

"Disabling the encryption is an executive order. It takes two Alpha Level members." Pierce says.

"I know. Company is coming." I say, looking straight at Pierce who still has a gun trained on him. I avert my eyes to the window that is looking out on the helipad. A chopper is landing. And none other than Nick Fury gets out of the helicopter and walks in. Pierce looks a little surprised, but Fury... Oh man. Pissed beyond belief.

"Did you get my flowers?" Pierce asks. Fury just glares. "I'm glad you're here Nick."

"Really? Because I thought you had me killed. "

"You know how the game works."

"So why make me the head of S.H.I.E.L.D?" Fury asks.

"Because you were the best and most ruthless person I ever met."

"I did what I did to protect people." Nick says.

"Our enemies are your enemies, Nick. Disorder. War. It's just a matter of time before a dirty bomb goes off in Moscow, or an EMP fries Chicago. Diplomacy? A holding action, Nick. A band-aid. And you know where I learned that. Bogota. You didn't ask. You just did what had to be done. I can bring order to the lives of seven billion people by sacrificing 20 million. It's the next step, Nick. If you have the courage to take it." Pierce says, thinking he can convince Fury that he is right.

"No," Fury says. "I have the courage not to."

"Rental scanner active." the computer says. Fury walks Pierce forward. I pull out my gun and point it at Pierce' head.

"You don't think we've wiped your clearance from the system?"

"I know you erased my password. Probably deleted my retinal scan. But if you want to stay ahead of me Mr. Secretary, you need to keep both eyes," He flips up his eye patch. "Open." They scan their eyes.

"Alpha level confirmed. Encryption code accepted. Safeguards removed."
