Chapter Five
Jewel stared at Alexei's back as they walked through the busy street. She couldn't even say goodbye to her new found friend, Anne, because he quickly pulled her from her seat as soon as he found her.
They quickly found thenselves in front of the car he owned. He pushed her inside and placed her seat belt on.
"I can do it by my--" She couldn't continue her sentence as she noticed how his usual calm facade was replaced by a stoic and firm one. She let him don the seatbelt quietly. She figured this was not the time to talk yet.
"Don't even try to get out of this car, milaya." His tone suggested an order not a request. She simply nodded as he closed the door and went to the other side. He sat on the driver's seat and flicked on the engine.
Jewel couldn't help but admire his physique as he drove them silently. It was unusual to see him on the driver seat. She shook her head. This was not the time to be mesmerized by Alexei. She needed to talk to him. Just like Anne explained, she needed to learn to trust him.
"Alexei..."
No response came from him. His focus completely on driving.
"Alexei... Please listen to me." She pressed on. "I want to tell you--"
He raised his free hand and stopped her sentence midway. She looked at him confusingly. He glanced at the rear view mirror and tensed.
Jewel looked back and noticed a black sedan behind them. It was heavily tinted so she couldn't see the people inside.
"I suppose those are your men tailing us?"
Alexei gripped the steering wheel a little tighter.
"They aren't?" She turned in her seat and opted to remove the seatbelt but his hand stopped her. "How long have they been following us? Alexei we need to call your men."
"I didn't bring my phone along." He quickly turned at the next corner.
"Why not?" Jewel grabbed on her seatbelt like it was her very own life. "Of all the time not to bring your phone, why now?" She shouted hysterically.
Alexei glanced at the car and noted that continued following them at the same speed. "Because I didn't want anything getting between us, angel." He calmly explained as their car accelerated. "I knew that if you had to fully trust me, I had to chose you instead of my job. I didn't want it to cause any misunderstandings between us."
Jewel gaped at his statement. "I'm not asking you to choose Alexei."
He took her hand in his and grinned. "I want to earn your trust milaya. This is my way of proving it. Call me arrogant, but when it comes to you... I'll likely do everything in my power to ensure you're protected and safe. Even if it means I have to sever my ties to the family."
She couldn't tell if she would cry or laugh at his remarks. It was either he was pulling her leg or he was a fool. But she decided it was the latter. He looked so handsome proclaiming to renounce his duty in the family for someone like her. She was also a fool because she felt elated hearing those words coming from him.
"You don't need to sacrifice for me Alexei. I believe in you."
Alexei shook his head. "Grab on tight angel." He exclaimed before turning a quick turn to exit to the highway.
