Chapter 9 -The Only Exception

By the time we reached the rest of the group, I had managed to pull myself together so that no-one would be able to tell that I had been on the verge of crying.

"Look, they're back." Tony announced, then everyone got up. They were all dressed in fancy clothing like they were heading to posh dinner party or something. "We've been last minute invited to a celebratory dinner in forty-five minutes." Tony said, glancing at his watch. Bingo.

I turned to look at Steve, and smiled small at him. "I should probably get back to my grandpa, I'll see you whenever I see you." Steve was about to reply when Tony interrupted.

"Wait, where are you going?" Tony asked me.

"Er, home." I answered as if he asked a stupid question.

"You do realise you're coming with us?"

"But.. I'm not an avenger." I replied, trying not to laugh.

"No, but you can be Steve's plus one."

Both of us choked on air, stammering and trying to come up with silly excuses.

"Why me?" Steve asked eventually.

"Yeah," I played along. "Why not.. Bruce?" I pointed to him. He smiled with embarrassment when everyone looked in his direction.

"Hang on, is there a problem with going with me?" Steve turned to me with furrowed brows.

"What?! No, of course not.. You're Captain freaking America!"

"Then it's a perfect match. Go home. Get changed and then we'll pick you up." Tony said with a finality in his voice, pointing to the lift doors. I held back a sigh and then turned around and went to the lift.

"I'll give you a lift." Steve said quickly, catching up with me. I furrowed my brows, but walked into the lift with him anyway. "I was escaping a taunting conversation with them." Steve explained as the lift doors shut, putting his hands behind his back. I smiled, nodding. There was a brief awkward silence before I spoke, trying to lighten the mood.

"So," I started, rocking backwards and forth on my feet. "I'm you date."

Steve chuckled nervously, nodding."Y-yeah, I-I, er, guess you are."

I looked up, about to ask him if he'd ever been on a date only to notice that his cheeks were light shade of pink. "Oh, are you blushing?" I laughed.

"What? No!" He defended himself, lightly tapping his cheeks. "It's not an actual date, so, no, I'm not blushing... It's... it's just hot in here." He mumbled.

"Then maybe you should take your shirt off." I said before thinking about it. I bit my lip as he chuckled, shaking his head.

"You'd probably pass out."

"Oh, what's with the ego boost?" I joked, punching him in the arm lightly. We joked around, and then decided to go to his place first to get his clothes and then to go to mine. I didn't realise I was in for a shock. Or a treat, depends on which way you look at it.

I had managed to get into the bathroom first, taking a quick shower then heading into my room to change. I was bent over in my underwear by my wardrobe, looking for something decent to wear, when I heard the door open.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" I heard Steve gasp. I nearly screamed, jumping and hiding behind my wardrobe door. I peeked out and saw him standing by my door with a towel around his waist, and to be honest, in that moment, I didn't feel embarrassed about him walking in on me half-naked. He was half-naked in my bedroom. He had turned around, covering his eyes with one hand. "Lily said you were ready." He said. "I'm really sorry."

I couldn't really say anything. I was hypnotized. "It's not real." I mumbled, stepping out from my wardrobe and slowly walking over to him.

"Huh?" He replied, not turning around. God bless his modest soul. When I reached him, I touched his bicep, feeling it lightly.

"Good Lord." I whispered. He moved his hand and glanced sideways at me, then closed his eyes. His face was at least fifty shades of red.

"Chris, you're not dressed."

"Sssh." I shushed him, my hands slowly travelling to his chest, and I could feel that his heart beat was racing. "Wow. It can't be real."

"Oh, it's pretty real." Steve mumbled, then frowned. "Chris, please, this is awkward. You're naked and you're touching me."

"What?" I looked up at him. "Have you never had a girl touch you before?" I asked. He shook his head, biting his lip. "Really? With a body like yours? I don't believe you." I whispered.

"Can you stop now?" He begged, his uncomfortably seeping into his voice.

"Oh, sorry." I said, finally lifting my hands from his chest. "I'll go put my dress on then you can turn around." I said, sprinting across the room and randomly picking out a black dress. No-one ever questioned black dresses. I quickly put it on then called out to Steve. "You can look now." I said as I adjusted the dress. I glanced over my shoulder to see him look over his, letting out a relieved sigh.

I just watched him as he sat down and started getting dressed. I watched him the way people watch birds. When they admire their beauty and grace in everything they did. That was Steve. Hard faced, straight-lipped super soldier out of time. I smiled to myself as I finally turned back around and did my hair. My guardian angel.

We were at this celebratory dinner for three hours and I was ready to kill myself out of boredom. I'd had quite a few drinks, and I was buzzing. And then Steve drove me home, and admittedly, tucked me into bed.

He had stayed at my end of the bed for a bit, neither of us saying anything. Then he stood up, ready to leave.

"Wait!" I called, biting my lip. He stopped, and furrowed his brows. "Don't leave me with the shadows." I whispered.

"They're not here." He said, sitting back down again.

"Just stay with me until I go to sleep." I bargained, the buzz from earlier still coursing through my blood. I saw him open his mouth to speak but then smiled.

"Move over then." He whispered. I grinned, shuffling over to give him room. "I don't usually do this, you know." He muttered. I rose a brow, wrapping my arms around him without thinking.

"So what's changed?" I asked, looking up at him. He didn't say anything at first. He just looked at me. These blue eyes on this handsome man staring back at me. What was he thinking? What was I thinking?

"The only exception." he said finally.
