Tara

I knocked on the door to August's house. His mother opened the door.

"Tara, it's so nice to see you." She beamed pulling me into an unexpected hug.

"Nice to see you too, Ms. Blair."

"Oh, child call me Sheila....or mama." She smirked.

She let me inside, Travis and Mal waved at me. I never left Aug's side while he was in the hospital. And while I was there I got a little close to his family.

"He's upstairs." She told me before disappearing into the kitchen.

I went upstairs and went to the room with all the 'keep out' signs. August laid in bed watching tv.

"How you feeling?" I asked as I sat on the edge of the bed careful of his casted leg.

"Bored, I was waiting for you to get here so we can go to the mall."

I noticed he was already dressed and ready to go. I have my dad's car so it's perfect timing to do this.

"You sure about this?" I asked.

"Positive." He said.

"Do you want me to help you up?"

"I'm good."

He stood with his crutches and I helped him down the stairs.

"Where are you two off to?" Sheila asked.

"To the mall, ma."

"Well yall be careful." She went back into the kitchen.

We got in the car and I pulled the shoebox from the back seat and sat it in Aug's lap.

"What's this?" He asked.

"What you're going to need to start."

He opened it and saw the wads of cash.

"How much is this?"

"Three grand. All the money I've been saving from my paychecks."

"I can't take th-"

"You can take it and you will. I don't mind, Aug."

"I'll pay you back."

"Don't bother, I'm doing this out of kindness. Just get whatever you want."

"Thank you." He smiled.

That was the first time I ever genuinely seen him smile.

"Come on Aug, get some more stuff." I urged.

He reluctantly grabbed more clothes he liked.

We got everything down to clothes, shoes, and accessories, he also got a IPhone6 with the money he had saved. Then we went back to August's house.

"Where did all those bags come from?" Travis asked as we walked through the door.

"Don't worry about it?"

"Don't make me kick your caramel, crippled ass." He said, plucking August on the forehead.

"Maaa, Travis just flicked me." August whined.
