When she was 17 years old, Lyudmila Turlanova joined the Red Army and was trained to fire a machine gun in the air defense of Leningrad. She's exactly the sort of person Inya's sister represents in the early chapters of The Undesirables. Since America announced today that women can now serve in all roles of the United States military, including the infantry, I thought Mrs. Turlanova's interview would be particularly appropriate to post.
