“I’m right here baby” I murmured, taking Spencer’s hand.
“We’re going to keep him in the hospital for the next couple of days. The surgery was pretty extensive.”
I smiled at the doctor. “Thanks for everything.”
“We’ll get a nurse in here to keep an eye on him until he wakes up.”
I kissed Spencer’s limp hand, and looked at his peaceful, sleeping face. My eyes travelled down to his dark blue cast which ran from his hip all the way down his leg, covering his toes as well.
“When do you think he’ll wake up” I asked the nurse, who was keeping an eye on at least three patients.
“It varies from person to person. He had a long surgery, so it could take up to three hours. Since he got out of surgery about an hour ago, it could be up to two more hours.”
“Not a problem honey, that’s what I’m here for.” She left the room to go check on her other patients.
I ruffled Spencer’s hair and kissed his forehead. He looked so peaceful lying there, and I couldn’t help but smile.
“Ms. Langston” a nurse said, popping her head in the door.
I sighed, and decided against correcting her again. “Yes?”
“A young man by the name of Blake Warren wants to come and visit Spencer. Is that alright?”
I shook my head. “I don’t want that man anywhere near my children.”
Blake came into the room, pushing past the nurse. “Alice, I know that you’re mad at me, but I’m worried about your kids too.”
“I want him out” I said to the nurse.
“Just let me know when he wakes up, please” Blake begged, as the nurse called for Security.
“Leave” I demanded, burying my face in my hands. I sobbed into them, my shoulders shaking.
“It’s alright honey” the first nurse said, putting an arm around me. She rubbed my back.
“I’m sorry, look at me” I said, giving a weak laugh.
“You’re holding up pretty strong. With two kids in the hospital, one just underwent extensive surgery? I would’ve broken much faster than you.”
I cried harder. “That’s not even what I’m crying over” I sobbed. “I’m such an awful mother.”
“You can tell me when you’re ready” the nurse said, still rubbing my back.
“Blake’s my ex-boyfriend” I said, all in one rush. Just the memories made me bawl. “He cheated on me.”
“Well that’s obviously not the whole story, or you wouldn’t be so upset.”
“You’re good” I weakly laughed.
“Just tell me when you’re ready” she soothed.
“I still love him” I whispered.
The nurse pulled me into a hug. “I know. It hurts to love the ones that hurt you.”
“It sucks” I said, drying my tears. “It absolutely sucks.”
“Well at least you got that off your chest.”
“Thanks. I know it’s not your job to comfort sobbing mothers” I said, with a weak smile.
“Honey, I’m here for you. I’ve got kids of my own, and if any of them landed here, you know I’d be crying my eyes out. Especially if the guy who caused it was the man I was in love with.”
“Yeah, it’s a big mess isn’t it?”
“Now I’ve gotta go and check on my other patients. I’ll be back though baby girl.”
I took Spencer’s hand in mine again, and intertwined his fingers with mine.
“Mom” Spencer croaked, and I rushed to his side immediately.
“Hey baby, I’m right here” I said, moving his hair off his forehead.
“What’s going on” he asked, looking around the room.
“Hey honey, I’m glad that you’re awake” the nurse said, with a smile. “Can I get you anything to drink?”
“A coke” he said, looking confused.
The nurse disappeared and came back within a minute. “Here honey. Can you tell me your name?”
“How old are you?”
The nurse looked at me to clarify, and I nodded.
“I’ll be back to check on you in ten minutes.” She turned to me. “By then he should be awake and talking.”
He took a sip of his coke and looked at his leg. His jaw dropped. “What the heck?”
“What do you remember” I asked, slowly.
“God, I don’t know.” He closed his eyes for a moment. “I was in the car, with Trey. Then I don’t remember. Um, I think we were headed somewhere.”
“You were hit, and you broke your leg.”
“Well obviously! I mean look at my leg, it’s in a huge cast!”
“You shattered your tibia and fibula and cracked your femur.”
“Wait, where’s Trey?”
