Lacey laid in her bed.
It was midnight, but she couldn't sleep. She hadn't in weeks. Not in her abject state of depression.
She poked her various bruises from her father's outburst earlier. He was the worst he had been yet.
Though, to advocate him, he is in a stressful spot. The Bird family is in dire need of money. Jeremiah is in charge of earning all of it at work. He'll come home after work, drown himself in alcohol, then take his stress out on his children.
Though, stress is still no excuse for his atrocious manner.
Lacey turned over, facing her door. A light was on outside. She could hear her sister's wails as Jeremiah beat her. A tear formed in Lacey's emerald eye, followed by many more. Soon enough, it became Lacey's way of wreaking to someone other than her sister.
She wanted to help Celestia so badly, but knew how much it would hurt her sister if she were out there instead of her.
So Lacey stayed in her state of turmoil and turned on the old radio. She turned the dial until she was satisfied with the channel. She took a moment to commemorate everything. Her razed hopes of a better life. Her sister's pain. Her mother.
She stayed mute as she wept, listening to the comforting song.
At times like these, she was in her deepest languish.
Lacey let out a whimper when she heard the scream.
That's it, she told herself. She threw off her blankets, wiped her eyes, and opened her door. She quietly bound down the steps until she reached her sister. She had to do something, anything. Anything if it could enhance this situation for her sister.
Jeremiah was holding a beer bottle in his hand.
"Macey, youre not any bettr! You shouldn be goin to school when yous culd be makin mes money!" he yelled in his slurred voice.
Lacey scrunched her nose at the smell of alcohol. It was almost as if he spoke in another dialect.
"Lacey, go back to your room," Celestia begged, not daring to look at her sister.
"No. Celestia, i can't let you go through this alone." A tear slipped down Lacey's cheek as she spoke.
"Wut bout mes? All yous two care bout is yourselfs. But mes, I do nothin all day but work to make moneys for yous two." He may not be aware of his flagrant actions.
Lacey whimpered as she took a punch to the arm. Jeremiah took another huge swig of the beer until the bottle was empty. Then he took her short hair and threw her against the wall.
"You're both wurthless! All yous are is espensive! Mabe yousll cost less like this!"
And with that, he smashed the bottle over Celestia's head. Lacey screamed as her sister crumpled to the floor.
No way Celestia could make a reprisal from this one.
Lacey's only elite in the house, aside from the man that just killed her sister.
