Chapter 22

“Matt, where are we going?” I asked, growing concerned for my safety. “Matt, you missed the turn off for my house.”

I sat in the front of his car, and stared at him as he concentrated firmly on the road. He was evidently up to something – taking me somewhere. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt me anyway…

I mean, he seemed to have displayed some sort of affection for me before. So he wouldn’t would he? I soon discarded the thought.

And, admittedly, he looked extremely cute driving. As he concentrated, his dimples became prominent and I felt myself smile.

He turned to me, “what are you looking at?” he asked. But it was obvious that he knew exactly what I was looking at and found some sort of humour in it.

I simply shook my head.

“Where are we going, Matt? Can’t you just tell me?” I asked, although towards the end of the second question the register in my voice heightened and it sounded more like a plea.

“Matt, you’re scaring me” I finally told him as we continued to drive to an undisclosed location.

“I can’t tell you. You’re mom said not to, otherwise you would refuse.”

I was taken back at his comment. My mom had said that?

It actually scared me how well they seemed to get along. If only she knew that I liked him. She would never live it down.

“Look, do you honestly think I would do anything to you?” he finally said, sincerely as he moved his attention from the road to me.

I shrugged. “Matt, I really don’t know you that well,” I told him. And the truth was I didn’t. I didn’t really know anything about him other than he had a sister.

I looked at him as he shook his head.

“What?” I challenged him. “Why are you shaking your head at me? I don’t understand why you can’t just tell me a simple fact and-”

“Me…I…you’re so selfish you know!” he finally responded, interjecting my little rant. He appeared to be angry with me now. “Haven’t you seen that you aren’t the only one in the world?”

I looked out of the window, angry and pretended I was looking at something.

“Look, there you go again! You know I’m right, and you’re too coward to admit it. Honestly, Charlotte. You give your dad a hard time for doing what he did…and being selfish. You’re just as bad as he is!”

I turned around. I stared at him.

For Matt to have brought my father up into this, he must’ve been thinking about the situation.

I started to see just how much I and everything else about my home life was a problem for him.

“What? Is that what all of this is about? My dad? I don’t even know how you are involved in all of this!” I seethed. I was genuinely angry with him.

I knew that he was definitely involved because his sister had been in such a state…but how?

He didn’t want to talk to this woman again…whoever she was…and so I began to ponder who it could be.

His girlfriend? I didn’t even know if he had one.

“You’ll find out soon enough” he answered with a surprisingly calm voice. “Has your mother contacted you yet?” he added hastily.

I checked my phone which was still in my hands after I had checked the first time. She hadn’t.

“Nope.”
