I'd Rather Stay With Delta

Start from the beginning

And he learns? What's gotten into you, D?

"This is not my ideal method of expression, however it seemed like it would be the most beneficial to you in current circumstances."

Ah, there it is, York drapes his forearm over his face dramatically, that really hurts, D.

"I simply mean that over my years with you I have discovered that there is no correct way of dealing with you, so 'most beneficial' is the best I can do. I apologize if I have offended you, but I do not see any other way, unless it is you who changes tactics."

Are you suggesting that I'm difficult to work with? Me? Just add insult to injury, why don't ya.

"York-"

It's okay, D. I'm just-I don't know, distracting myself with sarcasm.

"I see."

I don't know how else to deal with these emotions right now. But it's not fair to take it out on you. I'm sorry, D.

"There is no need to apologize. I do not fully understand your emotions, but from my observations of yours and others', you almost never overreact because of any of them except love. So, either your emotions are at an acceptable level, or you said all that out of love-which I am beginning to believe is the only emotion that should be used in excess once in a while."

Wow, D, coming from you that's almost a compliment. Thank you.

"I did say once in a while, and you tend to let your love of Carolina affect you much more than it should. But there are much worse emotions that you could allow to control you. We've seen that first hand."

Yeah. I'm sure the Director thought he had love in mind, for Allison, and even Carolina, but it turned into something else. Anger? Guilt? I don't know, but it sure wasn't love by the time the project went down.

"From what I can tell, there is no chance of you doing the same, even with the loss of Carolina."

I didn't lose her, she's just not here right now.

"That is dangerously close to what the Director likely thought."

Nah, this is different, D. See, she may not be here, and sure, I'd like her to be, but I'm not making fake Carolinas here. I mean, even if I didn't already know what a bad idea that is, it just wouldn't be the same without the real her, ya know?

"I believe so."

York yawns, stretching his arms out to the side. I guess I should actually try to get some sleep now. Goodnight, D. And thanks.

"For what?"

Everything.

Day 20 On the Job

"I think you're ready to try trotting on your own today," Joe says to York who is riding Belle around the ring at a leisurely walk.

"Um, alright. I can give it a try if you're sure."

"I was expecting more of a fight. But yeah, you've been doing great on the lunge line, I haven't had to do nearly anything the past couple of days, besides hold the rope and watch. You've even got the posting down," Joe assures him.

"Well you haven't steered me wrong yet."

"Then whenever you're ready you can ask for the trot. Make sure you remember to tighten your reins a bit first, and if at any point it's too much, just slow back down."
