Yasin, Mountains of Pétra

It was the dead of night, Abidah had been asleep since early in the afternoon after a long day of hunting, she had had an argument with her sister Maurie and that had made her even more tired. She was a deep sleeper when she was at home and no matter how much noise you made she wouldn't wake up.

But there was something wrong tonight. Her dreams, which to her always seemed to lack any imaginative content, was being plagued by very intense and realistic nightmares and there was one that stood out the most.

She woke up with a start. She was panting too. Wiping a hand across her sweaty forehead she swung her legs over the side of her bed. Her white night shirt was soaked from her perspiration, her body felt hot and clammy so she got off the bed and went inside her adjoining washroom. She splashed her face with some water from the face basin on the sink.

"Well that was a terrible dream."
She said staring at herself in the mirror above the sink. Dark red hair and big sea green eyes starred back at her. She had a small straight nose and cupid-bow shaped lips which were a bit chapped and dry. Her skin was a rich creamy colour that had turned golden brown from spending too much time in the sun. Her eyes were shaped like almonds giving her a catlike look, a drop of water running down the bridge of her nose glistened in the dim light causing her to crinkle her nose.

Sighing she grabbed the wash cloth that was hanging beside the basin and wiped her face dry. Abidah knew she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep so she made her way downstairs to the kitchen deciding she would have something to eat before trying to go back to sleep.

Even though times had changed and financial problems were not what they used to be, in the little hunting village of Yasin in the Pétra mountains times were hard since these mountains weren't ruled by a king but the people.

The eight kingdoms were ruled by the monarchy and the nobles and royals had to be respected. The mountains were treacherous and if you didn't grow up here you certainly would not be able to survive.

She didn't know her parents, the only thing she knew was that her mother died giving birth to her. Soren told her that when she reached the age of twenty he would finally tell her who she truly was.

Abidah knew she was different, even from her sister. Out of all the girls in the village she stood out like a sore thumb because of her crimson coloured hair, everyone else either had black, brown or blonde hair or something in between.

Opening one of the cupboard, she took out the left over raisin bread from dinner. Cutting a healthy slice she sat around the kitchen table and began to scoff it down. It didn't make sense for her to go back to bed now, she would have to wake up in a few hours anyway.

She got up to put the bread back into the cupboard when she heard glass smashing and a scream come from upstairs, it was from Soren's room. Bread forgotten, it dropped to the floor as she dashed upstairs.

She burst through the bedroom door and what she saw was enough to make her livid, distraught and her stomach turn all at the same time.

Blood was everywhere. There were muddy footprints all across the floor and when she followed the trail with her eyes they led to the window on the other side of the room. The window curtains were torn and they billowed gently in the night air and the glass that had once framed the window lay in bits and pieces on the floor.

Tearing her eyes away from the window she turned her gaze back to the agony sprawled over the room. Elith was laying on the bed spread eagled with her throat slashed open. Abidah had to put a hand over her mouth in order to keep the raisin bread she just ate down. Elith's eyes were open and the lifeless look they had was enough to make her fall to her knees in racking sobs.
