Chapter 13

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had made it home in less than twenty minutes, but no one was home. My heart sank a little, I was really wanting to see my baby, but I need to shower and everything, so it was for the best. I felt really sticky for the salty breeze. One thing about being coming to the coast I didn’t like. How sticky you felt after the day was over.
“Hey, where are you guys?” I heard talking Everett on his phone as we walked up the stairs. “Alright, we‘ll just meet you there, I guess.”
“Where are they?” I asked as soon as I saw him hang up his phone.
“They‘re at some arcade center.” he shrugged one of his shoulders. Something was off about him now. Like he was sort of upset in a way.
“Hey-”
He cut me off. “You can use the shower in my room, and I‘ll use the one in Riley or Miles‘ room.”
I just nodded. “Sure.”
As soon as we came to his door, he went straight to his dresser to grab a clean pain of boxers. He the went to his closet, which to me and from my view seems like a walk-in closet, and picked out a coral color v-neck, and a pair of dark jeans, and laid them on the bed.
He eyes flickered up from his clothes to me. “Shouldn‘t you be in the shower by now?” Now he just seemed annoyed with me. What the hell did I do this time? From what I could think of, I didn’t do anything.
I rolled my eyes, and headed for my suitcase to grab my toiletry bag, along with a pair of underwear, and a bra. “I‘m going.”
“Don‘t take long.” was the last thing I heard before I closed the bathroom door, with more force then intended.
I sighed as I leaned against the door. Honestly, what did I do? I shrugged off my clothes from my sticky skin and stepped into the shower.
On the way home we didn’t say much. I had kept staring at the ring on my hand, and I knew he was taking notice because he would glance my way every now and them, but kept his mouth shut.
The ‘what if’ questions were popping into my head on that car ride home. What if this is too soon? What if I should have waited? What if Riley or Miles kill me at dinner tonight? Maybe, I should have let him grovel, and beg for me back.
I guess my vibe was rubbing off on Everett, it was making him irritated it seemed, and I hadn’t even realized it until just now. Wow, Michelle.
Closing my eyes, I bent my head back under the shower head to get my hair wet. The hot water made me feel a little better, sort of soothing in a way.
I opened my eyes, only to stare down at the ring still on my right hand.
Was it too soon?
'
I stepped out of the steamy bathroom with a huge white towel around me, hoping Everett wasn’t in the room. I noticed the clothes on his bed were gone, so I’m taking that as he’s dressed and ready to go, so I better hurry.
Dropping the towel, I headed for my suitcase. “You really should make sure no one is in the room before you make such a bold decision.”
I felt myself jump inside. Good thing I already put on my undergarments. “Get out.” I demanded not turning to look at him.
“I think I‘ll stay here and enjoy the show.”
I huffed, turning to see him leaning against his dress.  “Get. Out.” His eyes flickered from mine, down my body, and back up. If he was close enough, I would have slapped him.
He arched one of his eyebrows. “This is my room, do you not remember?”
“Everett.” I warned.
“Michelle-” I knew he was going to mimic me, but his phone rang in his pocket interrupting him. “Looks like they‘re here.” he shook his phone at me. It looked like Riley’s name on the screen. He walked out the room, picking it up.
I took this time, ran over to the door, and locked it. “Ass.” I mumbled.
Well, at least it seemed like he was in a better mood. Not really, but still, he was talking more.
I chewed on my bottom lip, one of my hands propped on my hip, I didn’t know what to wear. Suddenly I wished I didn’t lock Everett out.
I heard the doorknob twist. “Michelle, you have ten minutes, and if you‘re not down in ten minutes-”
“I‘m a girl!” I yelled back at him through the door. “Girls don‘t take ten minutes to dress!”
“Well, let me in and I‘ll help.”
“Help?” I almost laughed.
“I‘ll pick something out for you.”
“Everett, go away.” I chuckled the slightest.
“Fine.” Not the answer I was expecting at all. I heard his footsteps fainting as he walked down the hall.
Well, I guess I better get ready, and fast.
I chose a maroon colored top, it was lacey, and screamed my name. Next, were blue high waisted shorts. And then, there was jewelry, I settled for a long gold necklace with a small gold feather pendant on it. It was one of those necklaces that sat right above, or right where your belly button is. And last, was the ring Everett had just given me at the pier. Cherry on top.
I slipped on my maroon vans I had bought just for this top. Ruffling my curly lion mane of hair just as I was about to leave the room, hoping it wouldn’t get too frizzy, and speed walked to the stairs.
“Michelle!” Riley yelled from the bottom of the stair case.
You would have thought it was weeks that he last saw me. “Hey.” I smiled.
“I missed my girl.” He picked me up squeezing me as I hugged him back.
“Missed you too.” I laughed as he put me down.
“You act like you haven‘t seen her in weeks, stupid.” Miles rolled his eyes.
Riley gasped. “I don‘t like your tone right now, mister.”
Miles laughed. “What are you talking about?”
“Men these days.” Riley huffed overdramatically, completely ignoring him.
My God. What is his problem?
Laughing I managed to greet Miles. “Hey, Miles. I missed you too, grumpy.”
“I missed you too.” he chuckled hugging me. “I was with him all day and you expect me to be happy?”  he questioned.
“All right, everyone done? So we can get going?” There was that irritated voice again.
“Relax man.” Miles reached in his pocket pulling out his keys, or rather my moms.
“Can I ride with you guys?” I let out little too fast.
Miles stared down at me confused. “Yeah, sure.” His eyes flickered to my ring, and his forehead furrowed the slightest as I hid my hand behind my back, hoping he didn’t get a good look at it.
“No, she‘s coming with me.”
No, no. I don’t want to talk or be alone with Everett. At least not right now. “Oh come on, you could use some alone time.” I playfully punched Everett in the arm. he stared down at me, already catching on that I was trying to avoid being alone with him.
“Alone time?” he raised an eyebrow.
“She can come with us if she wants, Everett.” Miles tone changed. I could hear a bit of irritation in his voice.
Everett looked from me to Miles, also sensing the change in his tone. “We need to talk, and it‘s best if we did it alone.”
“If she doesn‘t want to talk now, then you can‘t make her.” Miles said in a ‘duh’ tone. “Besides, what if I need to talk to her too?”
“You can wait.” He shrugged.
“It can‘t wait.”
“Sounds like a you problem, man.”
“Look..” Miles started.
Everett grabbed the hand that was behind my back, intertwining our fingers, while also exposing my ring. I looked up to see Miles’ reaction.
He looked pissed.
Oh crap.
Abort mission. Abort mission.
It can’t be too late to run up the stairs and fake that I have cramps, can it?
“Are we leaving yet? Or are you two not finished bickering?” Riley sighed. “Because if that‘s the case, Michelle and I will leave your asses home.”
“Yeah we‘re leaving, let‘s go.” Miles turned fast and headed out the door.
“See you two there.” Riley waved at us, and followed Miles, glancing back one last time mouthing ‘good luck’.
I swallowed quietly. I don‘t know who I‘m scared of more, Miles or Everett. It close to a tie.
“Let‘s get going.”
“Sure. Lead the way.”
He walked out the door with me in tow behind him. After locking the front door, we climbed down the front steps, stepped on the driveway, and starting for the car.
As we climbed into the car, he sighed, turning in the drivers seat to face me. “You don‘t want this, do you?” he gestured between us.
“This?” I questioned.
He shook his head. “Nevermind. This will have to wait.” he smiled at me softly as he started the car.
There was something about that facial expression of his that made my heart ache.
'
As we came up to our table where Riley, and Miles were, I felt my heart sink again. No Natalie still. I began chewing on my lip nervously. Where were they now?
“They just went to the house, they‘ll be here in a bit.” Everett said as he put his phone down in front of the chair I was sitting next to, and walked away towards the person that was our waiter, I’m guessing to let him know there were more of us coming.
“I have to go to the restroom, so..” Riley trailed off, standing up. He wasn’t even going to the restroom.
What a traitor.
Riley looked back as he was about to turn a corner, and mouthed the word ‘sorry’.
Clearing my throat. “So..”  I started down at the table.
“I cannot believe you, Michelle.” Miles started.
So it begins.
“I‘m sorry.” I sighed shaking my head. “I mean, yes it was fast-”
“Fast? I wouldn’t use the word fast in this situation. What you did today, Michelle..” he sighed, leaning forward, towards me. “I‘m trying my hardest to protect that fragile heart of yours, you know that right?”
I nodded. “I know.”
“Do you want me to tell you what I think?” He folded his arms on the table.
I focused on the salt shaker. “I‘m scared of what you‘re going to say..” I lifted my gaze to his, now focusing on his light green eyes. “but yes.”
He chuckled. “He‘s never given a promise ring to any girl, ever. You‘re the first.” he stared down at my ring. “I have a feeling he‘s going to keep you, Michelle. And this time, I don’t think he‘s stupid enough to let you just walk out of his life.”
I couldn‘t help but laugh. ”I hope he will keep me.”
“I heard someone say stupid. Whose stupid?” Riley sat down glancing between us.
“Everett.” Miles shrugged.
“He can be.” Riley rubbed his chin. “So, did you confess your love for her while I was away?”
Miles eyes widened. “What?”
“You know, your crush.” Riley bumped his shoulder into Miles’.
“I don‘t have a crush on-”
Riley sighed. “Denial is not the way brother.”
“Denial?”
“You have to do it, now. Before Everett swoops her off her feet. Tell her!”
“I don‘t have a crush on Michelle-”
Ignoring Miles, Riley turned to me. “He loves you-” he suddenly lurnched forward holding his side.
Miles elbowed Riley in his side. “As a friend.”
“I can‘t even.” I sighed trying my hardest not to laugh.
Riley pursed his lips, glared at Miles, while rubbing his side. “Fine, changing the subject. So, how long do you give them?” he looked at Miles.
Miles smirked. “I don‘t know.”
“I give them two months.” Riley whispered to Miles, while staring straight at me.
Miles nudged Riley. “I give them three, and Everett will be with a different chick.”
“Nah. You think so?”
“Definitely.”
“Maybe they‘ll last a Kim Kardashian.”
“Maybe.” Miles shrugged.
“How much you want to bet?” Riley turned his attention from me to Miles.
“Fifty.”
I’m sitting right in front of them, really? Huffing, I started waving my hands in front of them. “I can hear you?”
Suddenly Everett popped up behind them, placing one hand on Riley‘s shoulder, and his other on Miles‘. Leaning in, I heard him whisper. “Fat chance guys. I‘m never giving her up again.” with that he stood up, and punched them lightly in the shoulders.
Miles chuckled to himself, and mouthed to me, ‘told you’.
I gave him a small smile, but I still couldn’t help but wonder. I started chewing on my lips, looking down at the ring Everett had given me at the pier.
“Hey, we were just joking. We didn‘t mean to put doubt in your head, Michelle.” I saw Riley looking down at his empty plate sadly.
“No, of course not.” I smiled softly at the both of them.
“Listen.” Miles started, leaning over his plate, towards me. “Like I said earlier.” he gestured with his chin, to my ring. “I‘m pretty sure he‘s in it for the long haul.” He smiled. “So, if you‘re thinking or were thinking about getting rid of him in the future, you‘re shit out of luck.”
I couldn‘t help but really laugh, I really needed to hear something like that. “I guess so.”
“Mama!” I turned so fast, I thought I would have hurt my neck but luckily I didn‘t.
There was my girl, standing in a beautiful white floral dress and white sandals, holding my moms hand. She turned her attention to Riley and Miles.
“Bubbas!” She smiled brightly, waving at them frantically. ‘Bubbas’ meaning uncles.
“Hey cutie!” Riley grinned.
“Hey.” Miles laughed waving.
“Finally here.” My mom sighed sitting at one end of the table. “I‘m starving.” She laughed.
“Thank you.” I smiled to our waitress for bringing a high chair. “Yeah, so am I. Where‘s Everett parents?”
My mom looked around, then started smiling at someone behind me. “Right behind you.”
“Hey everyone.” Mrs. Thompson smiled at us, and gave me a second glance. “You look lovely.” She couldn’t help but grin. “I‘m praying Everett marries you, you‘re perfect for him.” she went on. “Perfect manners, perfect clothing chooses, you‘re gorgeous.” I couldn’t help but pick out that she said clothing chooses, but I guess that happens when you’re a designer.
Mr. Thompson chuckled, as he sat down. “We better pray hard then! It would be wonderful if you did become my daughter-in-law.”
Oh god. I feel like I should go either buy them something for being so amazing or go hide. They’re absolutely amazing! I felt a blush creep up my neck. “Thank you, and maybe.” I laughed sheepishly. “I hope Natalie wasn’t to much trouble.’
“Oh God, no.” Mrs. Thompson started. “She’s amazing, we didn‘t have any trouble with her at all. She was raised right.”
I couldn‘t help but grin, it‘s always nice to hear someone tell you, you‘re doing great at job raising your child.
I turned my attention back to Natalie, I missed her so much. “Natalie!” I smiled at her, turning sideways in my chair, holding my arms open.
She grinned a toothy grin at me, and started running towards me, but she ran past me, and towards someone behind me. “Dada!”
I couldn‘t help but starting laughing. “She met him once, and she forgets all about me.”
“Oh, Michelle.” My mom rolled her eyes.
“Hey, princess.” Everett smiled brightly while picking her up, placing a kiss on her cheek. “Getting jealous, Michelle?” he asked while sitting her between us in her high chair.
“Uh, a little.” I said truthfully.
He shook his head chuckling. “So, what about marriage?” he turned his attention to his parents.
“Oh, Michelle and you!” His mom beamed.
He laughed. “Maybe if Michelle will have me, then it‘s possible.”
“Maybe, if you weren‘t such a manwhore.” his mom shot back, smiling sweetly.
I gapped a little.
Mrs. Thompson held nothing back. I think I love her.
I’m pretty sure everyone at the table was shocked, except for Riley and Miles who looked like they were going to die of laughter. “Oh my god.” I whispered with my hand over my mouth, trying to hold back my laughter.
“Thanks mom.” Everett pinched the bridge of his nose.
'
We had finished dinner by six, and came home about thirty minutes later. He put the car in park but didn’t move anywhere. He just sort of stared out the windshield. I don’t know if he was looking at my mom carrying a sleeping Natalie inside, or Miles and Riley shoving each other aside. It looked sort of like a vacant stare.
I’m guessing he wanted to talk now. I unbuckled my seatbelt, and sighed. The silence was deafening.
“Do you want to do this, Michelle?” he suddenly asked.
“This?” I responded with the same answer again.
“Us.”
“Miles said-”
He sighed. “I didn‘t ask what Miles said.”
I felt my palms starting to sweat. “I, uh.”
He turned in his seat and faced me. ”Do you want to do this?” he asked again.
“Of course, I mean-”
“You mean?”
I bit my bottom lip. “I just..” how do I start it?
“I mean the whole way home from the pier, you didn‘t look so sure.” his face fell to my ring.
“I was just thinking..” I chewed on my bottom lip again. “If it was too fast.”
“I could tell.” he nodded. “Do you think it was too fast?”
“Well, it was sudden, but..”
“If you don‘t think you‘re ready, I understand-”
“I didn‘t say I wasn‘t ready.” I stared up into his eyes. “All I‘m saying is I was just thinking it was too fast, but I don‘t care.”
“You don‘t care?” One corner of his mouth lifted up the slightest.
I shook my head smiling. “No.”
“Are you sure?”
He picked up my right hand. “What are you doing-”
“I mean I can always take it back.” he smirked starting to pull of the ring.
I snatched my hand back. “Stop!”
I saw something glint in his eyes. His smirked faded quickly. “Michelle, I don‘t think you understand how much I‘ve missed you.”
I felt my forehead furrow. “What-”
“Michelle, I‘m sorry.” he hung his head. “I‘m so sorry for not going after you. I regret it still to this day.“ I saw his lips quiver. ”I‘ve missed you so much it‘s crazy. My heart ached for you, everyday. I can‘t even imagine my life without Natalie or you now. I love you two so much.“ He looked up at me, tears streamed down his face. “If I went after you that day-” he stopped as a quiet sob left his lips, he placed the palm of one of his head to his forehead.
I felt my heart breaking slowly at the sight of him. He‘s always been so strong. “Everett.” I grabbed his face making him look at me. “Shh.” I wiped the tears off his face with my thumbs. “We‘re here now, aren‘t we?” I tried to smile.
He nodded, trying his best to smile back. “Yeah.”
“We‘re not going anywhere, Everett. You‘re stuck with us now.” I laughed slightly.
“And I don‘t mind one bit.” he whispered.
I leaned my forehead onto his, and gently kissed the tip of his nose.
“Do you think she likes me? Natalie?”
I laughed at his random question, cupping his cheeks again. It was pretty obvious. “She loves you. It‘s like she knew exactly who you were when she first saw you.”
He nodded pulling out of my grasp. “I hope she does.”
I noticed tears started filling his eyes again. “Everett?”
He shook this head. “These are happy tears.” he laughed. “I‘m so glad you‘re back. I feel so whole again, well, more than whole now. I don‘t know, I‘m just so happy.” he laughed yet again.
“Well,” I placed my hand on one of his cheeks. “if you‘re happy, I‘m happy.”
He placed a small peck on my lips. “You‘re so perfect.” he whispered.
“It‘s starting to get cold.” I looked down at my legs to see goosebumps on my legs. ” Can we call it a night, and go cuddle in bed?”
He nodded his head agreeing. “Definitely sounds like a plan.”
“Let‘s go then.” I reached for the door handle, and was just about to open it, when Everett said three words that would always give me pterodactyls in my stomach, and make my heart melt in two seconds.
Those three words, I’ll never get tired of hearing.
“I love you.”
I smiled looking back at those green eyes I loved so much. “I love you too.”
