Chapter 19: As Cold as Ice

A week after the carnival left, everything returned to normal.  We all went back to school as the second semester started.  The socs stayed in their territory and we stayed in ours.  Everything seemed perfect, just how we left it before Bob died.

I walked down to the DX station to see Sodapop after school.  I wasn’t working today or tomorrow, which is good because tomorrow is hockey tryouts at school.  I love hockey ever since I was little and I was decent at it.  The only issue was finding a team that would take a girl.  As I approached, I saw Soda talking to a girl with blonde curls and a very round belly.  She was twisting her hair in her fingers and laughing.  They were both laughing.  A lot of names and thoughts ran through my head, ‘Why is Sandy here?  She didn’t move back here, did she?’  I walked towards them and Soda greeted me with a hug, but I denied it and looked at Sandy.  “You’ve got a lot of nerve coming back here after what you did.” I said blankly to her.

She kept quiet.  “Colly—“ Sodapop started to say.

“Soda stay out of it.” I said bitterly to him.  I was mad at him for a) talking to this tramp and b) enjoying it.  I turned back to Sandy, “After everything you did to him, you have the audacity to come here.  Do you know how much pain and heartbreak you caused this guy?” I pointed my thumb at Sodapop.

“I know and I didn’t mean to hurt him.  It just happened.”  She squeaked.

“Fall happens, rain happens, but this was a choice!” I said, “You’re nothing but a slut and a tramp.”

“I am not a tramp!” she shouted.

“Ooh, Blondie’s got a little attitude.” I mocked.

“Colly,” Sodapop said putting his hand on my shoulder, “She just—“ he paused.

“Just what! I told you if I ever saw her I would beat the living crap out of her.” I cried at him.  “I just want to know what’s happening.” I was on the verge of tears, “What does this mean for us?”

“Hey bitch, you want to kick my ass?  Beat me up?” Sandy shouted at my back.

I stared at her, “Yeah I wanna kick your ass, but I can’t cause I’d get jailed for hitting a pregnant woman and I don’t need the time.”

“That’s what I thought, you’re a chicken.”

As started to walk away, but when I heard her say that, I felt my fists clench and I turned swiftly on the balls of my feet and whacked her straight in her mouth.  “Bitch.”

I didn’t look back at Soda because I know he’d be mad that I punched her.  I was braced for a break-up; like I said before, I always screw it up.  I walked all the way to the lot and the sun was setting.  I sat down on the couch and smoked a cigarette.  I actually smoked two in a row, I was that tense.

“Colly?” It was Johnny.  I’ve haven’t been real close with Johnny before so I was interested to see what he had to say.

“Oh hey Johnnycake, how you feeling?”  I asked trying to make sure my makeup wasn’t smeared.

“Fine,” he inspected me, “What happened?”

“Oh, um, I was at the DX and uh, Sandy visited or moved back; I’m not sure, but she was talking to Soda and I told her off and she got mad and egged me on, so I whacked her square in the mouth.” I explained.

He was silent for a little while, “Good on ya, I never liked her and it was lousy what she did to him.”

“I agree, but Soda probably thinks I’m the worst, so I bet he’ll dump me.
