Jessie deposited her bike on the corner of the Cruz's lawn and then stalked up to Andi's front door. She knocked on the solid wood and waited—impatiently, even for her—for someone to answer. She didn't care if Andi's parents were home or if Andi was alone. Either way, Jessie was going to get inside and find out what was going on.
The door didn't open after Jessie's first attempt. So, she knocked again, this time louder. But still no one came to greet her.
Jessie frowned.
She knew Andi was inside. She'd seen her in the window. So, why wasn't she answering? Was she avoiding her? It was possible, since they'd never exactly been on great terms. Not that Jessie was at fault for that. Nope, that one was all Andi, because the first time they'd met, she'd duct-taped Jessie to the back of a door.
The back of a door! Can you believe it?
After that, Jessie had kind of stolen Hex out of Andi's backpack and taken it home. But it's not like she'd hurt the Hexoren or anything. And she never would've done it if Andi hadn't humiliated her and treated her like a baby that first day.
So really, Andi could only blame herself for what was about to happen.
"You can't hide from me, Andi Cruz!" Jessie said and then hopped off the porch and ran to the side of the yard to try and find another way in. But that way was blocked off, too.
Frustrated but refusing to give up, Jessie decided to return to the porch.
"This time I'll ring the bell," Jessie muttered. "Let's see you ignore me then!"
Just as she was about to launch herself back across the lawn, Jessie saw someone running in her direction. No. Not toward her, but toward Andi's house. Scared of being caught and possibly accused of trespassing, Jessie dove into a nearby bush and hoped that whoever it was, hadn't seen her.
Peering out through a hole in the shrubbery, Jessie watched as Emma ran up Andi's driveway, and without knocking, stormed inside.
"Why didn't I just do that?" Jessie asked herself.
But she already knew the answer: Because a person didn't just invite themselves into someone's home without being invited in. You never knew if they wanted visitors or would rather be left alone.
Clearly this wasn't the case, though, as Emma had just gone inside, Jessie reasoned. And if Andi hadn't wanted visitors, then she wouldn't have invited her friend over. So, therefore, it must be okay to go inside Andi's house, too. Right?
Tween logic told her to go for it, and so she did, tip-toeing her way up to the front door and letting herself inside quietly.
Jessie could make out voices from somewhere far inside the house, but they weren't clear enough for her to understand. Trying to be as silent as possible, she followed the sounds through the entranceway, down the hall, then up a flight of stairs, down another hall, around a corner, and after a few more steps—she was finally standing just outside what she assumed was Andi's bedroom door.
Emma had closed it behind her as she'd gone inside, but the wood wasn't soundproof. Jessie could hear everything they were saying on the other side. And the conversation was even better than she'd imagined.
"Hex, Andi somehow turned her bedroom upside down and made herself disappear," Jessie could hear Emma say. "I think she may have...developed powers? Or was given someone else's? I don't know. Do you know what's going on?"
