I returned to the hall, feeling worst than I'd ever felt before.
After sitting down (making sure I was settled far away from Souji), I rubbed my sweaty palms on my pants. "Do you want me to say anything to the rest?"
Souji's head jerked up to face me. The blood at the corner of his lips was now gone, and I guessed the same for his hand. "No!" His glare was so harsh, so cold that I shivered involuntarily.
"I got it, so stop looking at me like that." I glanced away, afraid that I would burst into tears if I didn't.
There was a pause before he spoke again. "Forget about what you just saw. It's nothing. Just hurt my throat." My grip tightened on my pants, recalling what Eri had said. I wanted to help, but I didn't know what I could do. A tear made its way on my hand, and I quickly wiped it away.
"Please at least rest," I whispered softly.
"Yeah, yeah, all right." Souji sighed in resignation. "Probably couldn't make it to Nijo in time anyway." I knew he was curious about where I had just ran off, so I looked at him, hoping that my eyes weren't red.
"Don't worry. I just went to see the kids." It was true after all. I ducked my head again, and we didn't talk for the rest of the night.
My head was spilting again.
So much things had happened. Kondou had allowed the twins to stay for awhile, because they had managed to act really attached to me, getting really agitated when they attempted to send them to the orphanage. The Shinsengumi captains were reluctant to let them stay with me, but they still gave in to the twins' irresistible puppy eyes.
Hijikata asked me if I knew why they targetted me, and I had looked away guiltily, remembering the warning the twins told me. I knew if I stayed longer, I would...
I claimed that I had no idea why they wanted to kidnap me, and the twins gave me a knowing look. I shot them a glare in return, and they quickly looked away, pretending that nothing was exchanged between us.
I was a demon. Yuri said that I was not an ordinary demon—I was the rare type that needed the life energy of humans. I didn't understand. I was certain that I was human back in the modern days since I didn't recover almost immediately after I got a small cut.
"Oh, you know." Yuri blew at her nails as if she had just painted them. "Chizuru-chan is a demon, but when you two switch, you become the demon, and she turned into a human." She tapped her chin. "We're not sure why though."
Eri was lying on stomach, looking satisfied to relax on a hot day. "Because you're not from this era, and you aren't suppose to be a demon, you need something to support your own life energy here."
The young girl laid next to her brother. "So in order to survive, you take the life energy of other humans around you."
"Okay, so now that I know why I need that life energy." I rolled my eyes, not believing that I was listening calmly to them. "How do I even...Can I control it?"
Yuri laughed. "No, you can't. You're like a succubus, you know? You need that energy. Even if you manage to control it somehow, you'll probably go berserk."
"So...I'm a succubus?" I frowned, trying to imagine a slutty and sexy me. Almost barfing, I pushed away that image.
"Yeah. It's just that you don't need to...engage in sexual activities to get one's life energy."
I choked on my own spit. Sexual activities!? I buried my blushing face into my hands, partially relieved that I didn't need to do that.
Ever since I came here, I wasn't sure who I was now. Who was I really? If I didn't know beforehand that I was a succubus—no, demon—there were probably a whole lot of other things about myself that I didn't know.
It was June, and everyone seemed to be excited about something. I glanced at them, slightly confused, and Yuri frowned.
"Here comes that dangerous guy," She whispered warningly, and I tensed up.
"This is...This is unconscionable! Never, in all my...!" Itou was panting as he walked past quickly. He looked so annoyed that I couldn't help but to ask him what was going on. "Why should I be made to bare my skin in the same room as those...those savages!?" He puffed, and I hid my laughter. "A supposed soctor that Kondou-san met during the shogun's visit has come here." He took a deep breath as if he was bracing for the impact. "He is conducting...physical examinations."
"What is wrong with that?" I gave him a look of exasperation.
"That hairless monster! He demanded that I remove my clothes!" I thought Itou looked violated, and let out a soft snort. "In front of everyone! When I refused, as any decent man would do, he attempted to remove them himself!" His face was so red from the anger he was feeling. "By force!"
Beside me, Yuri giggled and Eri gave him a dude-you-weren't-being-violated glance. I bit my lip to stop it from twitching into a smile. "Oh, my. That must be so dreadful."
He nodded so seriously I wanted to roll on the ground, laughing my guts out. "And the rest of them just...just stood there! What sort of uncultured savages are they!?"
"Who is this doctor? I'll love to meet him..." I was stifling my laughter with a hand.
"I believe he called himself Matsumoto Ryojun."
"Matsu...Oh!" I slammed my fist into my palm and ran off, Yuri and Eri following close behind me.
I burst into the room, panting a little. My heart was pounding anxiously—if I met this doctor, would he be able to point me out as an imposter? I raised my head, wiping the nervous sweat from my forehead when I paused.
"What the hell...!?"
Immediately I shielded my eyes with my hands, my temperature rising. Nagakura was almost literally shoving his body into the doctor's face, wanting him to praise how healthy he was. As he brushed it off nonchalantly, the others who stood behind Nagakura was scowling, displeased.
As they were complaining to Nagakura, Matsumoto got up and headed to the door. "Hm. looks like I'm out of medicine."
"Excuse me..." I started, silently hinting to the twins that I wanted to talk to him alone. They shrugged before running off like real children.
"Yes?" He looked at me, curious. "Well, I need to fetch some more medicine, so perhaps now is a good time for a break. Can you give me a hand?" I looked at his shiny head and managed to tear my eyes away from it, nodding.
Now, I needed to think of some reason or excuse for posing as a Yukimura...
