Someone stood in the corridor holding a birthday.

A small paper bag in one hand.
A neatly wrapped box in the other.
Something soft, something thoughtful. The kind of gift you give when you know a person too well to buy anything loud.

The corridor light flickered once, then steadied.

He raised his hand and pressed the doorbell.

The sound echoed longer than it should have.

He waited.

Nothing.

He pressed it again. Shorter this time. Almost unsure.

Still no answer.

That was when he noticed the door.

It wasn't locked.

It was slightly open, as if the house had taken a breath and forgotten to exhale.

He hesitated. Only for a second. Then he pushed the door gently and stepped inside.

The house was awake.

Lights were on.
The television played something meaningless, the volume low.
A half-filled glass of water sat on the table, untouched.

He glanced at the digital clock mounted on the wall.

12:01 AM

Just below the time, the date glowed quietly.

25th May

Her birthday had begun.

He smiled without realizing it and took a step forward.

Then something moved.

Not inside the room.

Outside.

His eyes shifted toward the balcony.

Time slowed, not all at once, but in fragments.

A shadow crossed the railing.

A girl.

For a fraction of a second, she was suspended between places.
Between standing and falling.
Between being alive and becoming a memory.

Her eyes met his.

There was no scream.
No dramatic pause.

Just recognition.

And then she was gone.

His body reacted before his mind did.

He ran.

The gifts slipped from his hands and hit the floor, forgotten. He reached the balcony and leaned over, his heart beating so loud it drowned out the city below.

People were already gathering.

Someone shouted.

Someone else covered their mouth.
