First Glance
I woke up early in the morning, earlier than I expected, earlier than I ever did back then.
The morning breeze was colder than I was used to.
"First real day of school," bulong ko sa sarili ko.
I checked the time, 5:30. Maaga pa. Kaya pa mag-ayos nang hindi nagmamadali. I fixed my bed, arranged my pillow, and even straightened the small rug near my door. Maybe kapag mas maayos ang paligid, mas kaya kong kontrolin 'yong anxiety ko about starting somewhere new.
Si Mama nasa kitchen, flipping eggs on the pan.
"Oh, ang aga mo," she said softly, smiling.
"First day," sagot ko, trying to sound cheerful kahit hindi naman ako sure kung gano'n talaga ang feeling ko.
"Good.
Hindi dahil sa school mismo, but because everything feels like a reset I wasn't ready for.
Still, I forced myself to eat at least half.
Pagkatapos, nag-ayos na ako. Wearing a black fitted tank top with wide straps, paired with high-waisted, wide-leg jeans in a medium blue wash, and a cloud-white samba shoes. Light makeup. Hair neatly brushed.
"You can do this, Eloise," bulong ko.
Bumaba na ako at agad na nagpaalam, then I grabbed my bag and left the house.
Different groups, different energies. Athletes, honor kids, mga tahimik, mga hyper... everything.
Pero ang unang napansin ko?
Again. Stares.
As if hindi nila inaasahan na may bagong student na lilitaw na parang eksena sa pelikula. Titig sila, 'yong iba discreet, iba halata.
I gripped my temporary ID tighter.
"Parang sosyal."
Napasinghot ako nang mahina. Hindi ako sosyal. Hindi rin ako artista. I just dress decently. Normal lang. Pero I guess dito sa small town... anything unfamiliar stands out.
I walked faster, searching for our classroom.
For a second, I froze.
Pero I forced myself to walk in like nothing was happening. I found a seat, second column, third from the back. Safe zone. Not too exposed, not too isolated.
