I entered the hospital and that hospital smell suffocated me. Obviously I had to hold it in that the smell made me want to vomit. Being nervous didn't help either. I don't know why I was nervous. It was my second scan, although it was my first without Nick. He was absolutely devastated he couldn't make it, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't gutted that he wasn't here to hold my hand and to see our baby again. He had some conference in Birmingham and he couldn't get out of it.
I walked towards the reception area and gave my details. I sat in an empty seat in an empty waiting room for the doctor to call me in. I was sitting there in silence for about half an hour. I was playing with the rim of my plastic cup nervously and my stomach was turning, or maybe it was just the baby kicking. The baby kicking was a pain in the arse, but it felt amazing. I could tell from the force of the kicks that either he or she is going to be good with a football!
Suddenly I heard someone call my name. "Carla!" I looked up at the doctor's room. Although it wasn't the doctor, it was Michelle who came after her shift, and just in time too.
"Hiya darling! Didn't know you were coming! So glad you're here. My nerves are shot!" I told her as she squeezed me tightly. Before she could reply, the doctor came out of the door.
"Carla Connor?" He asked looking at me and Michelle. I nodded at him as I picked up my bag and we headed in to the medium sized, dark room.
"How have you been then Carla? Any problems?" The doctor asked me. I felt a little uncomfortable as he wasn't my regular doctor.
"Nope, none. Fit as a fiddle me." I laughed slightly, knowing that I wasn't really fit at all. Apart from going to the gym, I sit at home in my sweats with Nick and eat takeaways and chocolate, or anything else I'm craving. I lay down on the stiff bed, Michelle grabbed my hand and smiled widely.
"I think it's lovely how couples like you do things like this." The doctor told us and smiled. Immediately Michelle laughed, and I joined in.
"No, we're not together. My partner couldn't make it. This is my sister Michelle." I laughed. The doctor suddenly had a face as if he'd just killed someone. The nurse laughed too.
"Oh I'm so sorry!" The doctor apologised uncomfortably.
"No, no worries at all." Michelle said and was still laughing uncontrollably.
"Well then, let's take a look at your little baby shall we?" The doctor tried to change the subject and forget what he said, but Michelle couldn't stop laughing. I tried to hold it all in but it was a real challenge not to giggle at 'Chelle's laugh!
The doctor placed some (freezing) gel on my stomach and then the scanner followed it. Michelle immediately stopped laughing and was mesmerised by the blurs, that appeared to be my inside, on the screen. He started moving it in circular motions as Chelle and I stared at the screen. I can't say it wasn't a nice feeling.
"There..." he began. "Is your baby." He said as he pointed at the screen and outlined the baby to make sure I could see the perfect peanut-sized baby. Happy tears came rushing down my face. Michelle was balling her eyes out too.
"Oh Carla!" She cried. "I'm so happy for you." She hugged me. I started crying and weeping as I thought about my bright future with Nick and our baby. I really have a chance with him. I feel safe and happy with him.
"Oh, hold on." The doctor said. His smile suddenly changed to a worried looking frown as he quickly typed on the keyboard with one hand while the other was holding the scan in place.
"What? Is my baby okay?" I asked concerned.
"We've picked up on something." The doctor replied as he looked shocked at the screen. Michelle and I looked at each other with worry.
