Abigail's POV
"So what is your take on this marriage?" The professor suddenly asked, making my heart skip a beat."
Why was he suddenly asking me this?!
I cleared my throat and shifted slightly on my seat, not knowing what to say.
Should I tell him that I'm not happy with this marriage? That I'm basically been forced into this? But if I do that, would he give up on me? And if he does, how would my father pay off his debt then?
One thing was certain here, and that is the fact that if I refuse this marriage, my father would have a lot of problems.
"Abby?" Professor Dalu's deep voice brought me back to the present.
"Ah... nothing at all. It's all just a little overwhelming seeing as it was only yesterday my marriage was announced to me." I said and forced a smile to lighten the mood.
He returned the smile and took my hand again.
"I know it's a little too much for you, but I promise to do my best for you. I won't do anything that'll make you uncomfortable, not until you're used to everything." He said, caressing my hand.
I didn't know what he meant by uncomfortable but I wasn't sure how much time it'll take for me to get accustomed to all these.
He let go of my hand and stood up.
"I'm afraid I'll have to take my leave now as difficult as that is, because I absolutely enjoyed your company, Abby." He said, dropping the mug on the center table.
"You barely touched your tea." I said, standing up.
"It got cold." He said with a small smile. "I'd love to have another cup of your mother's tea some other time." He continued.
Just then mother and father entered the living room.
"Are you leaving now professor?" Father asked and he hummed.
"I had a lovely time with Abby, but I have some things to take care of. I hope to meet with you all again as soon as possible."
"Let me see you off professor." My father said and they both walked out.
I let out a sigh and sat back down on the couch. I had finally met my husband to be.
"So...what do you think about him?" My mother asked, coming to sit beside me.
"He's not bad, but I don't love him mama." I said and she let out a sigh.
"Don't worry, the feelings will grow. You just need time." She said and tears slid down my eyes.
"What if I don't want to marry him mama? I really don't want to." She pulled me into her chest and caressed my hair softly, as my sniffles turned into muffled cries.
"Don't worry dear, everything will be fine. It's all going to be fine." She kept saying.

That evening, we all gathered round the table to have dinner. Everyone silently ate their food, only the sounds of spoons scrapping against the silverware was heard.
My siblings caught on easily. They already knew about my engagement to professor Dalu and they too were not very happy about it.
"I heard professor Dalu's child is two years old." My brother Abel, had said to me earlier in the day. "Are you going to become her mother?" At that point I realized my responsibilities had not been doubled but multiplied.
"Father is sister Abby really getting married soon?" Amos, the immediate youngest suddenly asked, breaking the silence in the room.
My father glanced at him and nodded.
"She is. You all should start getting used to not having her around."
I bit my lips, tears threatening to fall but I blinked them back.
I was tired of spilling my tears, they didn't make a difference anyways.
The next day my mother took me to the market to shop for clothes, jewelries and accessories. The wedding date hadn't been finalized but my mother wanted us to be prepared.
She started giving me intensive cooking lessons and childcare lessons.
"You're going to be his child's mother, it'll be a great opportunity for you to learn before you have a baby of your own." She said to me one day, as I changed my baby brother's diaper.
"How can I suddenly become a mother to a child I don't even know? What if she doesn't accept me?"
"She's still a baby Abby, she'll grow up knowing you as her mother." My mother replied and smiled at me. "You'll make a great mother, I can already tell by how well you take care of your siblings."
The day of my engagement was everything one would classify as memorable.
It was a very big celebration and every doubt of professor Dalu's wealth disappeared that day.
I had got to meet his daughter that day. She was pretty to say the least. A sweet, little bubbly child, that'll no doubt fill the void in my heart.
I grew attached to her almost too immediately. I didn't want to say goodbye to her that day and I couldn't help but look forward to our next meeting.
The days after that went by like a blur and soon I was in my wedding dress, walking down the isle with my father by my side.
It was a day I felt almost too pretty. Glamorous makeup, elegant white dress and pretty expensive jewelry, all bought by the professor.
I now called him Adrian, as he insisted. Most people called him by his last name. They preferred to go formal with him as it showed a sign of respect.
I clutched my father's arms tighter, holding the bouquet with my other hand. My heart was beating so fast, I could nearly hear my heartbeat.
We finally reached the altar and my father handed me over to Adrian, my husband to be in a matter of minutes.
"You look pretty." I heard him say with a smile. I blushed, glad my veil was covering my face so he wouldn't have to see that.
"Thank you." I said.
The priest started the process, each passing second felt like hours.
"Do you Abigail Aruani, accept Adrian Dalu as your lawfully wedded husband?" The pastor said and at that moment I knew this was it.
"I do." I said. Those two simple words, sealing my fate forever.
