"you feeling well today, yuj?"
hyewon looked at her friend who was busy changing into her jersey. yujin just smiled at her "i am, actually. trust me, i'll play well today." she said, adjusting the fit of her new jersey then rummaged through her locker again for her cologne—which she suddenly cannot find.
as team captain, yujin was grateful for her teammates. they always looked out for her, even when she insisted she was fine.
"jang wonyoung..?"
the name drifted through the locker room, yujin heard it but she paid no mind, she was busy searching for her cologne and she didn't really care about that certain brunette. besides, that name didn't concern her. or at least, she thought it didn't.
what she failed to notice was, the name was actually directed to her. she's still too busy searching and didn't notice that the whole locker room was quiet. the rustling stopped—also the small chatters.
"hey," a tap on her shoulder. yujin straightened and turned to face hyewon, only then realizing that every single one of her teammates was staring at her.
she blinked, confused. "uhm—?"
"is that wonyoung's number?" one of her teammates pointed out, yujin instinctively looked down. a bold, unmistakable 31 stared back at her. it took seconds for yujin to process—
this was not her number.
she pulled the shirt, weirded out by the situation. "this isn't my.." she trailed off, frowning. how did this even happen? she distinctly remembered folding her jersey before placing it inside her locker. she had even taken a picture of it—her name and her usual number, 1, clearly printed on the fabric.
her thoughts were spiraling. she needed to find wonyoung and demand an explanation—what the hell was going on, and where was her jersey?
what was wonyoung playing at? yujin's grip tightened on her jersey, the fabric stretching under her fists. was this some kind of joke? a way to humiliate her?
but damn it, she didn't want to approach her because she was supposed to be mad at her! gosh, what is she gonna do.
she let go of her grip on her shirt then ran outside with a frustrated huff. "tell coach i'm going to be a bit late!" she shouted for her teammates to hear.
as she sprinted down the hall, murmurs followed, they immediately noticed that something was wrong with her jersey.
"is she wearing wonyoung's jersey?"
"but number 1 has always been yujin's..."
"oh? jang wonyoung's name is printed on her back."
and when she ran past groups of students, the reaction was immediate. eyes widened. fingers pointed. whispers spread like wildfire.
you see— 1 always had been yujin's number since elementary school, and she has been playing for the basketball girls team since she enrolled in cheonghwa academy. everyone knew yujin as the star player of the girls' basketball team. and everyone knew that 1 was her number.
so to see jang wonyoung's name and number plastered on yujin's back?
it was a big deal.
yujin barged into the gym, her gaze darting around until she found them—lunar sparks, the school's cheerleading squad, scattered across the gym, probably on a water break.
yujin frowned and stomped towards the group of girls, searching for this certain tall brunette. but it didn't take long for her to notice a familiar color.
