He escalated again, mitts darting. You missed, missed, clipped, landed two, then slipped under one and thunked him in the ribs with a baby hammer shot.

He staggered an exaggerated step, clutching his chest. "She's killing me." he forced the words out, coughing sharply he felt as if that little punch was enough to strike a soul he knew he didn't have.

Romance, peeking in, fanned himself. "The drama."

"Again," Abby said, and you did, until your arms trembled and your breath rasped and your aura flickered but obeyed when you told it to stand down.

He crouched so his eyes met yours. "You did good, Caterpillar."

"Buff caterpillar," you whispered, teeth bared in a tiny victorious snarl.

"Buff caterpillar," he agreed, and flicked your sweatband like a knighthood.

Romance's Social Stealth & Lies:
"Act Like You Belong"

Romance had changed the set. Gone were boas and fans—now the living room looked like a waiting room, the world's most awkward test of patience. He'd arranged chairs, placed magazines, set a little bell on the side table, and—most importantly—posted signs:

NO DEMON VOICES, PLEASE and SMILE LIKE A HUMAN.

"Today," he announced, "we practice blending. We are civilians. We are unremarkable. We are wallpaper."

You raised your hand. "What's wallpaper?"

"Prison for walls," Abby muttered watching across the room with his arms crossed, no completely there for support but there to see the chaos.

"Background," Mystery translated from the doorway.

"Background," you repeated solemnly.

Romance sat, crossed his legs, and picked up a magazine upside down. "Observe. I am quiet. I am normal. I am boring."

You sat. You tried to be boring. It lasted four seconds.

The bell rang. You didn't touch it. Romance nodded: good.

A phone buzzed. You didn't jump. Jinu, who had set the phone to buzz under the couch, lifted one eyebrow: good.

Susie strolled across the coffee table—slow. Regal. The raven equivalent of a CEO on a victory lap. You watched her with rapt reverence and then, with the restraint of a saint, looked back at your magazine which was also upside down. Everyone exhaled.

Then Romance handed you a script. "We practice lies. Gentle lies. Useful lies. Smile. Say you like broccoli."

You stared at the paper like it had betrayed you. "That's a scary lie." Your cute features twsited in disgust at the mention of the green enemy.

"Exactly. If you can do that, you can do anything. Try."

You forced your face into a human smile. "I... like... brockly." if you weren't so adorable the boys would have known your attempt in a human smile would have been the most horrid thing ever.
