''I'm Enid, and welcome to Ophelia Hall. I know Wednesday probably hasn't said that, she's very doom and gloom.'' the bubbly girl spoke, skipping forward to greet the girl.
''I'm Demitra, I love your hair, it's very ... you,'' Demitra smiled.
Enid let out an excited squeal before grabbing Demitra's hand and pulling her over to show her belongings off, Wednesday rolled her eyes and went to unpack.
After fully unpacking and skilfully avoiding all of Enid's questions, Demitra took the opportunity to explore the school's twisting corridors more.
Just as she was about to leave, a certain hand trotted out in front of her. It just sat there, watching - well, as well as a walking hand could watch.
''Thing, do I need to loosen a few stitches in order for you to leave Demitra alone?'' Wednesday spoke before moving Thing out the way.
''Why do you have a living hand?'' Demitra asked, staring at Thing wearily.
''It's just part of Wednesday's strange vibe, you get used to it soon enough,'' Enid explained, grabbing the door for her.
Exiting the room, she walked straight into someone - a boy holding a particularly pink unicorn teddy.
''I'm so sorry, my fault,'' the boy spoke, adjusting the beanie on his head which Demitra could have sworn had something beneath it that moved.
''No it's fine, just blame it on the pink fluffy unicorn,'' she joked, the boy's face blushed considerably, hiding the teddy behind him, clearly embarrassed, before moving to knock on the dorm's door.
Nevermore academy was truly a sight to behold. It was cold but comfortable with remarkable statues and paintings around every corner, it quite reminded her of back home - well the cold feeling did anyway.
She had made her way into the main staircase of the school, its looming stonework was perfectly smooth, it was a piece of art in itself.
''Miss Veleska?'' a soft voice spoke from behind, turning round, Demitra found none other than Morticia Addams, who gently pushed Gomez away before elegantly waltzing over to her.
''Mrs Addams? You know my name?''
''Hmm? Yes, Principal Dort must have mentioned you,'' Morticia hummed.
Demitra laughed awkwardly to fill the silence as Morticia picked her apart with her eyes, before her gaze fell to her neck, where her necklace sat.
''That necklace, does it have any meaning to you?'' Morticia queried.
Demitra grabbed her necklace before looking at it, it was on a long silver chain which held a charm at the end of a silver heart made of cogs and springs.
''I - don't think so, it might have been passed down.. I don't..remember.''
Confusion stained her face, truthfully she had no memory of the necklace at all, it had always been round her neck - for as long as she could remember.
''Interesting..'' Morticia drawled, grabbing the charm and inspecting it.
''You've seen it before?''
''Well..''
Before Morticia could answer, Principal Dort interrupted them by running up to them.
''Miss Addams! Fancy bumping into you! Can I have a word?'' he spoke.
Demitra took this opportunity to walk back to her dorm, sensing the conversation was not for her.
Back in Ophelia Hall, once in the security of her section of the room, she pulled out her sketchbook and pen from beneath her pillow and mindlessly doodled, reflecting on the events of her first day at Nevermore.
There was something about the Addams family that set her on edge. Wednesday's menacing stare that seemed to pick apart all of your secrets and feelings. Or Morticia Addams, who seemed to know more about Demitra more than anyone else, even more than Demitra herself.
She zoned out, letting the pencil glide across the paper, mindlessly sketching what her mind wanted to.
Her mind was cut out of its creative flow when she heard a tapping, looking up, she saw Thing tapping on the wooden roof of a decorated dollhouse, grabbing her attention.
Putting down her sketchbook, she moved off of her bed and walked slowly towards Thing.
The creature laid his hand flat on the wooden surface - that's when she saw it, a silver ring on its little finger.
It was decorated with a coat of arms shape, embedded with a picture of a chess piece - a knight.
Demitra reached a finger out to touch the ring.
As soon as her finger connected with the cold surface of the metal, a flash of an image filled her mind and senses.
She visioned two hands, one was hers, being held by another, much larger hand - adorned with the very same ring that Thing was wearing.
It was just a simple flash, but it had the same sensation, the same warmth, of a sweet, comforting memory.
A memory she couldn't recall.
A memory she no longer had.
She broke out of her vision as fast as it appeared with a gasp. Thing stilled, almost as if he was watching her closely - like he was judging to see how she would react.
She moved back to her bed with a slight stumble. She needed to calm down. She needed fresh air.
She grabbed her sketchbook off of her bed, going to hide it again under her pillow when she finally focused on what she has doodled as she went to close it.
It was a scratchy sketch of a tree. Except it wasn't just a tree - it held the shape of a skull.
Usually her sketches showed things she had already seen. But this one was different. She had never seen it before in her life.
Well, she thought she'd never seen it, but she couldn't ignore the sense of nostalgia that came with looking at the drawing.
It had barely been a day at Nevermore, and already she felt as if she was losing her mind.
