Chapter 26 - Rachel Stark
"Fury?" I ask.
"I don't remember giving you a key." Steve says, leaning into the wall. "Do you?" he asks me. I shake my head.
"You really think I'd need one? My wife kicked me out." he says.
"I didn't know you were married." I say.
"There are a lot of things you guys don't know about me." Nick says.
"I know, Nick. That's the problem." Steve says. Fury holds up his phone and shows us what he's typed on it.
"I'm sorry to have to do this to you but I had no where else to crash." Fury holds up his phone again.
"Who else knows about your wife?" Steve asks. He holds up his phone once more.
"Just... My friends."
"Is that what we are now?" Steve says.
"That's up to you." Fury says.
Then there is gunfire. In the heat of the moment, Steve puts his shield up and pulls me behind him.
And then Fury is on the floor. I put my hand on my mouth and start to sob.
"Nurse! Nurse!" I yell and run out of the room. I run frantically down half a flight of stairs to try to find her. When I run into her, I frantically explain the situation. She pushes past me and gets up to my apartment first. I stumble in, tears running down my face as the EMTs run past me and shove me out of the way. Steve runs over and pulls me into a hug. I start to sob into his chest and he starts to run his hand through my hair to try to calm me down. Then the bitchy nurse turns toward us and ruins our moment.
"Can we get a 20 on the shooter?" she asks, full attention on Steve. As he breaks out of the hug, I see something in his hand.
"Tell them I'm in pursuit." Steve says, and runs out.
"Let's go." the nurse says. I follow them out to the ambulance and hop in. I silently cry on the way to the hospital, getting dirty looks from the nurse. When we arrive, I fill out all of the paperwork. When I finish, I run frantically down the hallways to find him. As I'm running, I look into a room. There he is. I slowly walk in, my eyes on Fury the whole time. I finally make it to the window.
"Is he going to make it?" I ask in a whisper.
"I don't know." Steve says.
"When did you get here?" I ask Steve, still whispering as if Fury was listening.
"A little while ago." he says.
"Tell me about the shooter." I say, eyes locked on Fury.
"He's fast. Strong." Steve bows his head. "Had a metal arm." I freeze.
"Ballistics?" I ask through gritted teeth.
"Three slugs, no rifling. Completely untraceable." Maria says. When did she get here?
"Soviet-made." I say, starting to shake.
"Yeah." is the response I got. I couldn't even process it before an explosion of noise erupts in the surgical room. The pull out a defibrillator.
"Don't do this to me Nick." I say. I feel Steve come up behind me and hug me from behind. We are just standing here, helpless. I can't do anything. I hate this feeling. I hate this hospital. They ask for a pulse.
