Chapter 2: Assigned Seating & Unwelcome Chemistry

The mahogany doors of Room 204 creaked open as Ava stepped into her first class—Advanced Political Ethics.
The room was oval-shaped, with tiered seating and tall stained-glass windows that made it feel more like a royal courtroom than a classroom.

She scanned the room for a free seat, only to find a clipboard pinned to the doorframe.

Assigned seating? Seriously?

She walked over, brows furrowed, and ran her finger down the alphabetical list.
Verma, Ava — Seat 11B. Partner: Singh, Dev Aryan.

Her heart dropped into her stomach.

No. No. This has to be a mistake.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” came a voice from behind her. Familiar. Sharp. Irritatingly deep.

She turned around slowly. Dev Aryan Singh stood there, arms folded, one eyebrow raised.

“Looks like we’re stuck with each other, sweetheart.”

Ava scoffed. “Don’t flatter yourself. I’ve survived worse.”

Dev leaned in, just a little. Close enough for her to catch a whiff of his cologne—cedarwood and fire. “Not here, you haven’t.”

She brushed past him and took her seat, ignoring the looks from the rest of the class. Whispers were already buzzing like flies:

> “Did you hear? The new girl’s sitting next to Dev.”
“She must have no idea who he is.”
“Or maybe she just has a death wish.”

Dev slouched into the seat beside her, flipping open his notebook lazily. “So, what’s your damage? You allergic to rich people or just me?”

Ava turned slightly, voice flat. “I’m allergic to arrogance. You’re a walking trigger.”

That earned her a low chuckle. “Careful, Verma. I bite back.”

Before she could respond, Professor Weston entered, all tweed and intimidation.

“Let’s begin,” he said. “Your first assignment is a two-person debate. You will argue from opposing viewpoints. Your partner will challenge your stance. This will determine twenty percent of your midterm.”

Ava’s stomach twisted.

She’d wanted to keep a low profile. Blend in. Survive.

Instead, she was now paired with the most explosive boy in school—a boy who looked like a sin in uniform and acted like he owned the place.

And judging by the look Dev gave her—equal parts amused and deadly—he wasn’t planning to go easy on her.

She didn’t know that this debate wouldn’t just be academic.

It would become the first battlefield in a war neither of them would walk away from unscathed.
