Harriet closed the door behind her, shutting out the echo of Ning You’s venomous words. The air in the room felt still, almost too quiet after the tense atmosphere outside.

Her gaze swept across the space, taking in the surroundings. The room wasn’t small enough to feel cramped, yet not spacious enough to reflect the status of a daughter from a wealthy family. Everything was arranged neatly the bed was tucked perfectly with crisp, ivory sheets, a small desk sat by the window with a single lamp casting a warm glow, and the wardrobe stood in one corner like a silent sentinel. The pale cream walls were spotless, and the faint scent of fresh linen lingered in the air.

It was clean, orderly and comfortable enough for anyone else. But to her, it felt… lacking.

As though the space had been carefully curated not for love or care, but out of duty.

She moved toward the bed and let her body fall into it, the soft mattress absorbing her weight. Her limbs sank into the comfort, but her mind refused to settle.

She stared up at the ceiling, the events of the day pressing down on her chest like a heavy stone. This body, this house, these people it all still felt like an elaborate play she had been thrown into without a script. It was too surreal being alive, breathing again, feeling her heart beating in her chest after everything. And now, to keep this second chance, she knew she had to survive. To survive meant completing every task the system demanded from her, no matter the cost.

The room was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioner. Harriet laying at the edge of the bed, her mind was far from calm too many pieces of unfamiliar reality pressed against her thoughts.

Slowly, she drew in a deep breath, steadying her pulse.

“System 227,” she called softly into the stillness, her voice barely above a whisper.

A faint chime echoed in her head a sound that seemed to ripple through her consciousness rather than her ears.

[Host, you have summoned System 227. State your query.]

Her black eyes narrowed slightly. “I want full details on this Lin family. Names, relationships, history, and where I stand among them. No filters.”

The system responded without hesitation, its tone neutral yet carrying the weight of undeniable truth.

[Lin Zheng—your biological father. Age: 58. Status: current head of the Lin family, a wealthy businessman whose empire spans real estate, luxury goods, and political connections. Personality traits: pragmatic, calculating, emotionally detached. His primary focus is maintaining the Lin family’s prestige and influence. His relationship with you: minimal and distant. He provides financial support but avoids involvement in your personal life. Reason: He wishes to preserve the harmonious facade of his legal marriage with Ning You. Sentimental attachment exists solely due to his past relationship with your mother, whom he remembers with selective fondness.]

Harriet’s lips pressed together. The so-called ‘sentimental attachment’ was a thin excuse to soothe his conscience.

The system continued.

[Ning You—current wife of Lin Zheng. Age: 55. Status: socially influential due to her family’s old money connections. Personality traits: proud, possessive, vindictive. She regards you as an embarrassment and a threat, believing your existence tarnishes the Lin family’s reputation. Her methods: verbal humiliation, emotional manipulation, and passive-aggressive isolation. Motivation: to protect her daughter’s position and ensure no illegitimate offspring threatens inheritance.]

The image of that woman’s sharp gaze and mocking voice earlier flashed in Harriet’s mind.

[Lin Meixue—legitimate daughter of Lin Zheng and Ning You. Age: 24. Known for her social charm and ambition. Public image: the perfect socialite, educated, refined. Private behavior: manipulative, condescending, and possessive over what she considers hers. She is married to Shen Wenyu, heir to the Shen family. Relationship with you: hostile, viewing you as a coward and vixen.]
