Diane’s POV
Being invited to Smith’s office was never a good sign.
“Listen, I got some info regarding your case, an old friend of mine told me this in confidence. Your friend and my employee James Dubois was seen leaving Boron Corp. the same day Grant was murdered, around the same estimated time of murder.
This is enough to make him a suspect. Now, it’s no secret that you have a close personal relationship with Attorney Dubois and if this comes to light, you might also be linked to the murder and if that happens, I would be forced to take you off the case…and possibly off my payroll.
They plan to file a murder case with him as the prime suspect, all I need you to do is to testify against him, put him behind bars and you get to keep your job and maybe even win your case. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Choose wisely.”
“How could you do such a thing? You have put me in a bad spot and it’s not fair. Now I have to choose between you and my job. I think it would be best is you turn yourself in.”
“No, you don’t get to do that, don’t make me feel guilty, I’m your best friend and I did this for you, you could win the case if you follow the lead I found for you. I put my life on the line for you, so you don’t get to play the victim.” He said.
“So then, what would you have me do?”
He seemed to think for a while before finally speaking “Marry me.”
“I’m sorry, what? Nigga I know you didn’t just ask me to marry you.” I said in disbelief.
“If you are my wife, no one can force you to testify, I found you evidence that can get you this win, you owe me.” He said.
I felt compelled to do as he said, almost like it would be unappreciative not to comply after what he did for me. I felt a strange guilt that made me feel the need to compensate him for the trouble he went through.
“Even if we wanted to, they will likely arrest you tomorrow, where would we find a registry that fit us in their schedule today? In case you haven’t noticed, a lot if people are in love.” I asked.
“Leave that to me.” He says reassuringly.
2 hours and 2 witnesses later, I had a piece of paper that stated that I am now legally married to my best friend.
Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad, maybe he wouldn’t get convicted, maybe I could even learn to love him.
The only thing I knew for sure is that this was far from over.
