Chapter Thirty-Three : You are Welcome
The sun is beginning to sit when Katsuki sees the shape of his humble home on the horizon. The vibrant colors in the sky paint the prettiest picture Katsuki has ever seen, but he's too... occupied... to appreciate the beauty.
He knew his actions would have consequences and he knew Y/n wouldn't take it very easily, but he wasn't prepared for the bout of depression that would follow. It's been days and he hasn't so much as heard a whisper from Y/n. She stopped crying two days go when he told her about Izuku's funeral. She hasn't cried or spoken. She's been quiet.
His mother told him that people grieve differently. He was aware of this. He fought in a war, after all. But this was different...
Katsuki dismounts from his horse with a grunt and runs through the motions of untacking and grooming before throwing his trusty steed out in the pasture. He puts his gear away in the small barn on his parents' property and then heads inside. The house is quiet, which isn't unusual nowadays.
His parents have been staying in town later to avoid coming back home. It's depressing and they don't really want to be around unless it's necessary. It's sad, but it's the truth.
Katsuki has adopted a new routine. Instead of going straight to his room, he takes the time to start supper. His dad has taught him a few things and he's grown to enjoy the act. It's something he prides himself on.
He lights a few candles and gets to work; preparing a warm meal consisting of biscuits and gravy and coffee. It takes no longer than half of an hour to whip up. He was lost in his thoughts when he heard the floorboards creak.
Katsuki's heart stopped for a second. It stuttered. For a moment, he thought someone was in his house. He thought someone was going to kill him. But then he remembered that someone else did inhabit the house.
He turned his head to look over his shoulder and to his surprise, Y/n was leaning against the wall.
Katsuki and Y/n stare at each other from across the table. Their dinner sits plated in front of them. Nearly cold and untouched. Neither of them have said a word. He's just been sitting there staring at her.
Katsuki is too enthralled by her presence to say anything or even eat. Y/n, on the other hand, is too tired and weak to muster up words. She watches Katsuki's observant eyes scan her features. She knows she looks like hell.
Her cheeks have sunken in and her skin is pale. Her hair is greasier than normal and she can feel herself starting to break out around her chin. She's thinner than normal too. Gone are the floral patterned skirts and pretty blouses.
"Uhm... Are you thirsty?" Katsuki asks after a few quiet moments, clearing his throat and adjusting his position. He glances at the pitcher of water in the center of the table. "My ma' might have wine or whiskey hidden around here somewhere if you ain't want water."
Y/n blinks. She opens her mouth to talk, but nothing comes out. "I'll have water." She rasps out after clearing her throat, almost wincing at the action.
Katsuki is quick to grab a cup and pour up some water for her, sitting down with a loose smile. "I've missed walking you to school." He whispers, "I've missed you."
She nurses her water, allowing the cool liquid to quench her thirst and hydrate her throat. It feels so good. It's then that she remembers she has a job. "Oh my! How are my kids? Are they okay?"
The blond nods with a hum. "They're fine. Aizawa has been workin' with them. I think they'll be ok if you take a few more days."
Their conversation quiets down after that. At least Katsuki does anyway. They focus on eating in silence.
It's not much quieter for long. At some point, the sound of a wagon pulling up can be heard. Over the sound of gravel crunching beneath its wooden tires is the sound of Mitsuki shouting.
Y/n looks over her shoulder. She can see the couple through the window. It isn't long before they're walking through the door. Laughing. It makes Y/n's brows raise. She hasn't heard laughter like that in weeks.
She shouldn't have reacted though, because as soon as Mitsuki and Masaru's eyes laid upon Y/n, their laughter was dying.
"Oh my goodness! Y/n, how're ya?" Mitsuki can't help but drop whatever she was carrying and pull Y/n into a stiff hug. She pats her on the back and then swiftly pulls away, looking her over. She frowns. "Have you gotten much sleep?"
Y/n has enough strength to muster a small smile. "I'm okay... and I've slept a little bit. I appreciate your guys' generosity. I don't mean to overstay my welcome."
Masaru gasps from within the kitchen. "Oh nonsense! You've always been welcome, honey. You can continue to stay for as long as you want." He punctuates his statement with a bright smile.
"Thank you guys." Y/n looks at every Bakugou in the room and gives a smile, topped off with watery eyes.
