I know it

The haveli’s corridor was quiet as Kritika and Kai made their way toward the guest rooms. Kritika had a towel slung over one shoulder, her face freshly washed, hair still damp. Kai, beside her, yawned lazily, arms stretched behind his head.

They walked in a silence only siblings can share — familiar, easy.

Then Kritika smirked.

“So… Raj, huh?”

Kai froze mid-step. “What?”

“Oh, nothing,” Kritika said innocently. “Just… someone looked a little too happy handing Raj a laddoo tonight.”

Kai rolled his eyes and kept walking. “You’re imagining things.”

“Am I?” she said, skipping ahead and walking backward to face him. “Because the way you were not looking at him was the most obvious thing I’ve ever seen.”

“I wasn’t looking at him.”

“Exactly. You avoided his gaze like he was the sun and you were a vampire.”

Kai groaned. “You’re insufferable.”

“I’m observant.”

He narrowed his eyes. “I’m going to bed.”

But Kritika followed him, grinning. “You know, I’ve never seen you stammer. But the moment Raj says anything remotely sweet, your ears go pink. Just like now—look!”

Kai covered his ears with his hands, face half-buried in his hoodie collar. “I’m going to kill you in your sleep.”

“Not before Raj gets his goodnight hug,” she said sing-song.

Kai threw a pillow from the corner bench at her. She dodged it, laughing.

“I hate you,” he muttered, already pulling off his slippers by the bed.

“You love me,” she replied, climbing onto her own bed across the room and flopping onto it dramatically. “You just hate that I’m always right.”

A comfortable silence followed as they both lay down, facing the ceiling.

After a few minutes, Kritika whispered, “Kai?”

“Hmm?”

“You don’t have to tell me anything. Just… if it’s ever real with him… you’ll let yourself be happy, right?”

Kai was quiet for a second.

Then, softly: “Yeah. I think I will.”

Kritika smiled in the dark.

“Goodnight, idiot,” she murmured.

“Night, menace.”

And somewhere between teasing and truth, the two siblings drifted off to sleep  safe, close, and annoyingly inseparable.
