“You want me to take you straight home after your detention?” Mr Haner asked as we arrived at school and pulled into the car park.
I actually would have preferred that I stayed in school – no doubt I would have to tell my mother about the text message.
I shook my head and got out of the car. I glanced down at my cell again, and breathed a sigh of relief to find that there was only a half hour left of lunch time.
“If I was to leave early, I would rather have left now,” I kidded as I walked ahead and into the main building.
Trying to conceal the heavy, purple cast on my arm was a lot harder than I ever imagined. And as I walked down the corridor, I passed my group of friends.
“Charlotte?” a voice cried, “what the hell happened? Where have you been?”
I turned around to see Benji, Joel’s brother, rush over to me and embrace me in a hug.
In turn, Jenna and Emily also ran over. “I fell down the stairs” I whispered.
“At least it hides the…you know…” Jenna trailed. Well, she was right about that. I’d never thought about it before.
I nodded. “I’ve got to go. I need to be in detention. You guys are still coming over tonight, right?” I called back as I began to make my way to the English corridor.
They nodded. “I’m bringing Joel and Mikey too,” Benji shouted back, to my happiness. “Is that okay?”
“Yes! Of course. Oh, but we’re going to my parents place now” I responded – almost completely forgetting to tell them that.
“See you” they all shouted as I walked through the door way and into the English corridor. Mr Sanders was the first door on the left.
I walked up to it and peered through the window to see that he was in the room, marking books. He looked incredibly cute when he concentrated.
I knocked before entry and slowly sent him an apologetic smile. “Why are you so late?” he asked, looking back down at his work.
But then, he looked back up at me and did a double take.
“What happened to your arm? Is it broken?” he asked as he walked up to me, taking hold of my arm which made my body move forward closer to his.
I nodded as my breath became shallower with our distance. I faced the floor as he raised his arm and gently jerked my chin up so that I was looking at him.
Concerned, he looked up and into my eyes. “Have you been crying?” he asked gently. The worry in his voice made me feel a lot happier and secure about it, and about how close we were getting at that moment in time.
“Well, of course. It hurt like a bitch” I tried to joke, making light of the situation. He didn’t seem to buy it.
I wanted him to just leave me alone, the more he fussed, the more upset I would get about everything.
He raised his eyebrow before narrowing his eyes at me. “Is there anything you want to talk about?” he asked. He seemed genuine for once when he offered his help.
Something seemed to have changed about him – I thought that it was most likely just the conversation he had had with his uncle.
His hazel eyes seemed to allure my in a way that I didn’t want to lie to him – and I also figured that if I told him about the text, then maybe his connection to my family would be revealed.
I pulled away from his locking gaze and sat down at a desk.
He too sat behind his, and sat up facing me. “Charlotte. I’m a teacher, I’ve been trained to detect when something is going on. Just tell me. I’m supposed to be here to guide you” he persuaded.
