If you are looking for a story full of hope, inspiration, and well-adjusted people doing emotionally intelligent things, I must politely suggest you put this book down immediately and find something more cheerful — perhaps a self-help guide or a novel involving talking animals and life lessons.

This book, unfortunately, is about a man who has lost his way. Not in the "took a wrong turn on the subway" sort of way, but in the far more inconvenient, soul-splintering way that leaves you staring at blank pages, unanswered texts, and microwaved leftovers at 3 a.m. His name is Rowan Thorne, and he used to be a writer — until he wasn't.

The story that follows involves strange coincidences, inconvenient emotions, and a very persistent stranger who knocks at the door precisely when Rowan decides no one should.

It is, in many ways, a love story. But not the simple kind. Because this story, like most things worth reading, is messy, complicated, and written with a pen that occasionally leaks all over the page.

If that still sounds like something you'd like to read, then I suppose there's no stopping you.
