Rithvik's POV

I didn't look at her right away. My eyes stayed fixed on the floor, on a random scratch on the tile that had never seemed worth noticing before.

The silence was heavy. Not the kind that's peaceful. The kind that coils in your chest and threatens to choke you if you don't start talking.

She was still waiting.

So I did.

I spoke.

"I knew her," I said, voice low. "Sayra."

Mom didn't react yet. She just blinked, urging me with her silence.

"I knew her before today. I didn't recognize her at first... but when I did — everything just came rushing back. I remembered her face. Her voice. That day."

"That day?" Mom repeated, cautious now.

I nodded. "My farewell. School farewell. She— she proposed to me. Publicly. Right in front of everyone."

Her eyes widened just a little. Still, she said nothing. But I could feel her patience stretching thin.

"I rejected her. I... I humiliated her."

The words tasted bitter in my mouth. I had never said them out loud. Never admitted it like this. But now, it felt like confession — and punishment, both.

"I said—" my throat burned, but I forced it out, "I said, 'Are you joking? Look at you and look at me. Just... leave. And next time, don't embarrass yourself like this.'"

Her breath hitched. I could hear it.

I still wasn't looking at her.

"I didn't mean to be cruel"

I finally looked at her.

She was frozen. Disbelief. Pain. Anger. All swirling in her eyes.

I wanted to explain more. Tell her how I'd changed. How I regretted it. How I wanted to fix it — not the marriage, just... the damage I had done.

But before I could say a word more —
Crack.

Her hand met my cheek.

It wasn't rage. It wasn't fury.
