You’ve probably heard of Romeo and Juliet

You’ve probably heard of Romeo and Juliet. You probably know how their violent delights have brought about their violent ends. But, I am betting my life on it, you probably don’t know me.

I am Rosaline Capulet—creation of Shakespeare, cousin of Juliet, and first love of Romeo. You wouldn’t know what I look like or how much beauty I behold, for I have never appeared on stage nor in films. My name was part of the script, but my presence was absent in every single scene. The playwright himself, with all his sense and balding glory, failed to prioritize me in this tragic tale he had so carefully woven.

But, of course, why would he? It was always about Romeo and Juliet, but never about me.

I have my own tragedy to tell as well. Once, I had a heart so pure, so chaste, so innocent, and I gave it to Romeo. At first, he looked at me the same, with as much fawning and flame. Our hearts used to beat as one. Our bodies used to dance in our own rhythm.

But it was at the Capulet ball when cousin Juliet met my beloved Romeo. Hear me out, dear reader, because Romeo went there for me. To see me. Me! Not Juliet. But what could I do? How could I intervene when Romeo said so himself—that he never saw true beauty until that night? And no, he wasn’t talking about me; he was referring to my cousin.

He never climbed balconies for me, but for Juliet, he did. He married her hastily. Too frightened to see her gone. Too eager to consummate the love they had begun.

All I did was stand by the sidelines and watch helplessly, crestfallen, unable to chase after him. Until now, nobody knows that Rosaline is just as important in the play as the star-crossed lovers have been. Let this be a cautionary tale to you, dear reader. Sleep with your one eye open. Never let your beloved out of your sight. Fight for him, if you must, with all your might. For there has never been a tale of more woe than that of Rosaline losing her beloved Romeo.
