Hearts In Tune 22

Sameerah watched the video Hafsah had sent one more time before turning off her iPad. Between sitting in the glass covered balcony listening to the sound of rain overhead and watching videos of Aminu touching, listening to her, waiting for her and looking out for her, she had no idea what to believe. Things had slowly spiraled out of being make believe and those videos made her feel like they were real.

She had just watched a compilation of him holding out his hand for her to leave the stage, him holding a bottle of water for her and passing a handkerchief over, him shielding her from the fireworks they’d set at their state dinner while still making sure she’d watched it. The comments were filled with praises, but if she didn’t know better, if she wasn’t there and if she didn’t know it was all PR done well, she would have been fooled as well.

The sliding door to the balcony opened and the balmy air conditioning blew past him as he quickly pulled it shut. “Enjoying the rain?” He asked, as he walked to the edge and looked out. She was tempted to do the same, but she forced herself to sit and watch him take in the views of the rolling green mountains of Gembu where they’d taken their three day honeymoon.

It was all they could get because Aminu was right in the middle of campaign season and it didn’t seem wise to be frolicking around Europe  while needing to be at campaign grounds. She’d enjoyed it immensely and was grateful to be away from the great noise of Kano.

“I wish I was governor of  Taraba, I’d be flying here every weekend.” Sameerah didn’t know what pushed laughter out of her but she heartily laughed with honest delight until he turned his attention to her.

“Sorry-“ She watched as He pursed his lips and turned back to the pleasant view ahead of him. They were on a beautiful tea farm with a small farmhouse with the most picturesque stream and views of the highland mountains from the balconies of the farmhouse.

“It’s just, you’re the governor of Kano for a reason. You won that election the last time with barely any opposition to your unmarried status the last time, you should know it must have been Allah’s grand plan for you to lead Kano. Stop wishing.” She shook her head as he shrugged, with not even a word in her direction. But the man that Sameerah knew, she was sure he was going through her words in his mind.

“You know I thought I was going to lose?” He left the edge of the balcony and walked to sit next to her on swing fitted to look like a hammock.

“You can’t be serious. You won Rano local government in less than two hours after counting started, you should have gone to sleep by then.” She turned to watch him raise his hand to his face, definitely going through the events in his mind.

“You were watching?” He asked her, surprise coating his words. Sameerah nodded, held her tongue to the roof of her mouth before she said with a cheeky smile, “I was supervising our donation.” They both burst into loud laughter that went on for a good minute.

“After we won Rano, my mentor asked me to go to sleep. As you know, Nasarawa came in almost close after and I won by such a large margin that sleep came almost immediately.  I hadn’t slept in days leading up to the election or even eaten properly. This time around, my opponents are prepared, the air is different. I’ve done my best, my first exam is this election and I hope all of this-“ He pointed between them, “Is enough to make me win.”
