Dhanay arrived yesterday. I didn’t get the chance to meet him because of work. But today—today is my week off, and I’m finally going to see him. It’ll be the first time I meet him since my marriage. God… it's been so long.
Once upon a time, we lived under the same roof, shared meals, fought over the TV remote, laughed at silly jokes. And now… now we have to make time to see each other. Huff… How drastically life changes.
I called mumma early in the morning to let her know I might come over today. She was over the moon, her voice brimming with excitement. And I… I was equally eager to see them again—my first family, my comfort zone.
Just as I hung up the call, I saw Trayambak getting ready for the office. He was combing his hair, his reflection glowing in the mirror under the morning light. I walked up to him, slowly wrapped my arms around his torso from behind, pressing my cheek against his firm, muscled back.
“Kya hua baccha?” [“What happened, baby?”] he asked, his voice soft, affectionate.
“Kuch nahi… wo aapse kuch puchna tha.” [“Nothing… I just wanted to ask you something.”]
He turned to face me, his eyes immediately gentle. He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear and brushed his thumb across my cheek, melting me a little.
“Kya puchna tha baccha?” [“What did you want to ask, baby?”]
I hesitated. My heartbeat loud in my chest. He can’t know Dhanay is home. He’ll say no. But I can’t go without telling him either. He’ll be furious.
“Wo… mujhe maaike jana tha.” [“Umm… I wanted to visit my paternal home.”] I mumbled nervously, eyes avoiding his.
He paused for a second, then simply said, “Theek hai jao. Aaram se mil lo sabse. Kaafi time bhi ho gaya nahi mile. Shaam tak aa jana. Aur gaadi le ke jaana, public transport use karne ki koi zarurat nahi hai.”
[“Okay, go. Take your time and meet everyone. It’s been quite a while. Be back by evening. And take the car—there’s no need to use public transport.”]I blinked. Wait… what? That’s it? No questions? No arguments?
Did he just… agree? So easily? I thought I’d have to emotionally blackmail him or negotiate like a diplomat. But… he seemed to genuinely want me to go. That alone made my chest feel warm.
Before I could say anything more, he leaned forward and kissed me softly. “Bye baby, see you in the evening. Love you.”
"Love you too" I replied him back.
He walked out the door with his bag slung over his shoulder.
I stood there frozen for a moment, surprised at how smoothly it had gone. Then, smiling to myself, I rushed to change my clothes—my heart already halfway home.

When I reached, mumma opened the door. Her face was… pale. Puffy eyes. Something was off. My excitement dropped instantly.
“Mumma kya hua aapko? Sab theek hai na?”
[“Mumma, what happened? Are you okay?”] I asked, panic rising. She didn’t answer my question. Instead, her voice trembling, she said, “Andar aa beta.”
[“Come inside, dear.”]My feet rushed before my thoughts could catch up.
And then I saw him.
Dhanay. Sitting on the couch. Broken.
