The breakroom clock blinked 6:42 PM in muted red.

Shift change was crawling, like it knew her nerves were already shot.

Tianni leaned against the counter, styrofoam coffee cup in one hand, the other thumbing mindlessly through her phone.

Her scrubs clung to her like the day's weight, her edges frizzed with humidity and stress.

She hadn't eaten more than a muffin since noon.

But her stomach wasn't empty because of hunger—it was that annoying kind of flip-flop that only came with him.

Ghost.

Even now, the thought of his voice from earlier, that low, bitter rasp in the parking lot, still sat heavy in her chest.

She'd gone the rest of the day trying not to think about it.

Trying not to replay the sharp smirk on his face when she made him call his baby mother, or the fact that he actually did it.

But she couldn't help herself.

The moment she opened Instagram during her break and saw his story—just a black screen with "Y'all gone make me cold again..." written in white font, a song playing low in the background—it tugged at something.

Something dangerous.

Something soft.

And then... nothing.

He'd gone silent.

No more stories.

No petty quotes.

No more "chess moves."

Just silence.

She sipped the lukewarm coffee, phone pressed to her thigh like it was burning through her pocket.

Maybe he was with his daughter.

Maybe she let him.

Maybe he was lying when he said he wasn't with her anymore.

Maybe...

She sucked in a slow breath.

And before she could convince herself not to—her thumb hovered over his name, then tapped Call.

The ring tone hit instantly, buzzing loud in her ear like it knew what she was doing was wrong.

He picked up.

Not right away, not fast—but he picked up.

"Yeah?"

His voice was dry.

Distant.

Not how he usually answered her.

No "what's up, ma," no slick teasing in his tone.
