Author's POV -
"Uth," ["Get up."] Trayambak's cold voice pierced through the silence as he patted Dhimahi's shoulder.
She lay still, pretending to sleep. Her pillow was damp with tears, her chest heavy with unshed screams. The sound of Surbhi's moaning from last night still echoed in her ears. And the call logs-God, those call logs. But nothing was proof enough.
Still, she didn't move.
"Uth, tujhe sulane ke liye nahi laya ghar pe." ["Get up, I didn't bring you to this house to let you sleep."] His voice grew harsher, and the next second, she was shoved hard.
Her heart ached, but she got up, wiping her tears quickly and rubbing her eyes to fake sleepiness.
"Jaldi breakfast bana mera." ["Make my breakfast quickly."]
She nodded numbly.
"Koi meeting hai kya? Itni jaldi breakfast ke liye bol rahe hai?" ["Is there a meeting or something? Why are you asking for breakfast so early?"] she asked, trying to keep her voice neutral.
"Jitna bola hai utna kiya kar." ["Just do as I say."] His tone sliced her like a knife.
She swallowed the lump in her throat and turned to the kitchen, dragging her feet as if her soul had been left behind.
Trayambak got dressed in his crisp formals and came down. As she was plating the parathas, his phone buzzed.
It was Surbhi.
Her breath caught in her throat. Her hand trembled as she served him a bowl of curd.
He didn't care.
"Hello Surbhi, bolo." ["Hello Surbhi, tell me."] His voice softened for her, like it never had for Dhimahi.
"Okay, pack that bag as well," he said before cutting the call.
Dhimahi stood still, her knuckles white around the glass jug.
"Pack that bag..." the words echoed in her head like a scream in a cave.
"Kahi jaa rahe hai aap?" ["Are you going somewhere?"] she asked gently, placing her hand on his forearm for support.
He didn't even look at her. Just took a bite.
"Haan." ["Yes."]
"Kaha jaa rahe hai?" ["Where are you going?"]
He finally glanced at her, irritation on his face.
"Kahi bhi jaun tujhe kya? Mil raha hai na do waqt ki roti aur raat mein sex, aur kya chahiye?" ["What's it to you where I go? You get two meals a day and sex at night, what more do you need?"]
Her breath left her body. Her knees almost buckled.
"Aap... aap aise kyun baat kar rahe hai? Bataiye na kaha jaa rahe hai?" ["Why... why are you talking to me like this? Just tell me where you're going?"]
He slammed his plate. The porcelain shattered on the floor, just like her heart.
"Helsinki jaa raha hoon 2 din ke liye. Shanti milegi tujhse. Jab dekho manhoos sa chehra leke aa jaati hai mood kharab karne." ["I'm going to Helsinki for two days. I need peace from you. You always show up with your cursed face and ruin my mood."]
Her lips trembled. "Surbhi bhi jaa rahi hai?" ["Is Surbhi going too?"]
"Dimaag hai ya bech khai hai? Wo meri secretary hai, important meetings mein jayegi hi." ["Have you lost your mind? She's my secretary, of course she'll come to important meetings."]
