Chapter Twenty-Seven : Missing Katsuki
Weeks go by and the culprit responsible for the murder of Mighty River's elders has yet to be caught. The authority in town has been trying to find them, but every lead they come up with turns up to be a dead end.
Even though it's been a few weeks, the town is still in mourning. Most people have continued on with their daily lives, but a big portion of the community is still grieving the loss.
Izuku has been grieving hard these last few weeks, and as a result, he hasn't really been able to give Y/n the attention she needs. They were supposed to be planning a wedding, but he hasn't been in the right headspace.
Every morning, while Izuku is sulking in one area of the house, she'll walk herself to work. She spends her lunches alone and at the end of the day, she'll walk herself back home. She almost doesn't mind, but she's lonely. Izuku is a husk of who he used to be.
She doesn't mind putting wedding planning on hold—that's okay—but what about the chores that need done around the house? Most days after Toshinori's passing, she's been coming home from work to find that nothing has been done. On occasion, Izuku will do one small thing but it's not common enough to warrant any relaxation for Y/n.
Today is no different. Y/n had to wake up a little earlier than she's used to so that she could put the chickens out and turnout the horses. She made lunch for both Izuku and herself then did a few small things before getting ready. When she left, Izuku was still held up in his room. She could hear little sniffles so she knew he was awake. But by then, she was exhausted.
As the sun begins to rise, she starts to walk down her lane. Sand and rocks crunch beneath her weight and she can hear chickens crow down the road. The town is already bustling with life; cowboys stopping in for breakfast before heading to work, and some of the town drunks stumbling out of the bars and brothels. She's walking by the general store when a certain blond man comes out.
Their eyes meet and Y/n stops in her tracks, her frown deepening. Katsuki doesn't budge. He doesn't move a muscle, he doesn't smile or frown, he just stares at her. When Y/n chose Izuku (which felt like a very logical decision to make, she doesn't know why Katsuki was so butt hurt over it), she didn't want to lose Katsuki. She enjoyed their time together and keeping him as a friend was her goal, but she understands why he left.
Something in the air changes. Katsuki blinks and emotions wash over his face. Anger, grief, guilt, happiness, and maybe even lust can be picked out from the display of twitching muscles and furrowed eyebrows.
There's a fire in his eyes, and it's almost scary. Y/n gulps, taking a small step back. Before she can even think about walking away, Katsuki crosses the distance between them.
"Good mornin', Darlin'." He starts, his eyes obviously scanning her body before meeting her eyes. "Ya off to work?"
Y/n nods, "Yeah..." She blinks, "Yeah, I'm gonna be late..." She continues.
The blond smirks, "I have a few minutes before I gotta be at the ranch. Let me walk ya to the schoolhouse."
And for some reason, Y/n doesn't object his offer.
The two spend the rest of the walk catching up, talking and cracking jokes. Sadly, Y/n can't even say she hated the conversation. She's been lonely and she did miss Katsuki, which she kind of hates to admit, so it was enjoyable.
She learned that Katsuki will be leaving for a cow drive in a few days, which she did frown at, but she wished him safe travels either way. "I won't be goin' too far away, Sweetheart, so you don't gotta worry." He shrugged, "And I'll even bring ya a souvenir."
Eventually, they get to the schoolhouse and their conversation dies down. Y/n comes to a stop at the foot of the steps and turns to look at Katsuki. He's watching her, that fire still bright and his face reflecting whatever he's thinking. She frowns and turns around, "Would you..." She pauses, "Would you like to walk me home today?" She asks.
Katsuki nods with a hum, "Sure thing. Now get to work, or you'll be late. Remember?"
Y/n pushes down a giggle but she does as she's told and climbs the staircase. Katsuki's eyes don't leave her face once. She'll turn her head and offer a smile one last time before entering the schoolhouse.
Due to how long she took getting to the schoolhouse, she didn't have very long to prepare for her day. She banished Katsuki to the furthest corner of her conscious mind and practically runs around her room; sweeping out dust and wiping down the desks before going around and placing individual books down. Kids start to file in, offering greetings and small gifts, as she starts to write on her blackboard.
"Good morning, Miss L/n!"
"Hi Miss Y/n!"
"How're you, Miss L/n?"
She greets every child with a smile and a response. Just like every day, an array of pretty apples find themselves on her desk. The pile only gets bigger as more and more kids fill the room. While they wait for the bell, they gather in groups to talk with one another.
Soon, the clock tower rings, signaling the beginning of their day and the kids quickly find their seats.
She spends a few extra minutes preparing for her lessons today, but when she's done she turns around to face her anxious class. They're practically buzzing in their seats, eagerly waiting for whatever knowledge Y/n will be sharing with them.
"Alright kids," she claps her hands together and wanders over to her desk to pick up a little book, "Let's get started."
Y/n tried her best to focus, but no matter what she did or what she was talking about, her train of thought always came back to Katsuki. She often found herself wandering if she made the right choice, and if Katsuki would be a better husband in the long run. She loved Izuku, of course, and she was thrilled that she would be spending the rest of her life with him, but a big part of her couldn't help but wonder...
When lunch time came around, she was grateful. She could finally take some time to relax—maybe even rid herself of Katsuki for a little while—and chow down on something good. Instead of going outside to eat like she normally does, she took a seat at her desk to get some lesson planning done.
Since all of her kids were outside, it was a lot easier to focus and relax. She could still hear their boisterous laughter through the open windows and door, so she wasn't too worried about anything.
Not long into her lunch break, she can hear the stairs to the school house creek. The wooden porch creaks beneath someone's weight and then suddenly there's a low knock vibrating through the air. Y/n looks up from her book of lesson plans to find a certain blond haired man.
She perks up, and she's sure the surprise is evident on her face. "Katsuki! What're you doing here?!" She clears her throat and rises to her feet, flattening her skirt.
He shakes his head and invites himself inside. It's then that she notices the small bouquet of wild flowers and a little cotton sack. "Wanna have lunch together?"
