“You didn’t say the president was going to be at the state dinner, you this demonic child. You’re out to embarrass me but Allah will not let you, your mother and I have arrived in Kano and we will come into the venue as your parents, understood?” Sameerah could not help the smug smile that overtook her face at her father’s frantic words. The previous night, the president’s wife had personally attended their intimate dinner with family and had questioned loudly why her parents were absent.

She knew rumors would get back to her father, so she waited, she woke up after her light fajr nap to over thirty missed calls from her father, none from her mother, Whom she knew was still smarting from how disgraceful it was not to be at her daughter’s wedding reception.

“Yes Baba, once you’re ready to leave the house, please let me know so I can connect you to the wedding planners.” Her father started to speak but she quickly turned off the call and returned to the room filled with vendors for the wedding, they were taking photos, setting up and sharing snippets of the wedding on the internet.

The internet, however lapped up whatever Sameerah and Aminu were selling because thousands of people flocked to her previously desolate page waiting for updates. They called them the #IceCouple and waited for every word from any of their vendors. She took a deep breath of relief as she sat in the makeup
chair and waited for her session to begin.

As much as she worried about Aminu being a good husband, she also hoped that they’d be able to fool the public. So far he had followed his PR’s team lead and everything was coming along so well. She hoped that all of their work would not be futile, and would be just enough to make him a governor a second time because he truly deserved it.

“Ma’am, please close your eyes.” She had a brief for her makeup, and so far her artist had stuck to it. Simple and elegant with bright colors on the eyes, just enough not to look like a child playing with colors. As the makeup artist worked on her foundation, she heard her phone ring. She lowered her lashes and opened her eyes a little bit to see who was calling and her heart began to pound once she saw it was Sa’ad calling.

She set the phone down for a moment, feeling it vibrate against her lap as she warred within herself. He could not have anything useful to say for sure, only out to sour her good mood. The phone began to ring again and this time she didn’t wait to overthink it before putting the phone on her ear.

“Assalam Alaikum,” She greeted, shutting her eyes firmly for the makeup artist to put some color corrector on her eyelids.

“You surprise me everytime. I underestimate how well you can take this cashing in on favors thing and you show me how far you can take it. There’s no end point with you, there’s only one point and that is hell. Sameerah, you invited the president to your wedding to disgrace Baba right?” Sameerah said nothing, focused fully on what next the makeup artist needed her to do.

The door to the room swung open and the scent of karak tea poured in. She quickly opened her eyes to make sure she wasn’t imagining the sweet scent and smiled wide when Hafsah reached her side with a chinoiserie mug supported by a plain white saucer.  She mouthed, “Karak tea?” Hafsah nodded excitedly and she let a smile bloom on her face. Nothing Sa’ad was going on about in her ear mattered more than taking the first sip of the tea Hafsah was holding.
