Summary: One of the well-known legends surrounding Fortuna tells about a mysterious person who plays the flute late at night

Note: This entire story is written in Ren's POV

Fortuna. One of the most famous places in the land. Having two legends surrounding the historical records. One is about the Legendary Dark Knight that is Sparda, and another... About a mysterious flute player.

Nobody knows who the flute player is, considering they are always hidden in darkness and only plays their flute during midnight. Hence their name, the Midnight Flute Player. They play their flute at exactly midnight and then stop at 4 AM.

Other than the identity, the Midnight Flute Player seems to show no threat towards the citizens whatsoever. The harmonious melody of the flute serenades them, giving them a piece of tranquility in the dead of night, like a siren enchanting humans, mainly men, with her voice.

When I first heard the melody of the flute, I had thought a bird named Woods Thrush made those sounds. They're well-known for their flute-like voices.

I really don't care much about where the voices came from. Whether from a random person or from an animal with a similar sound. All I care about is the soothing music of the instrument and the way it plays.

However... Like any other person, I'm also curious about the person who played it. Whoever plays that instrument at that hour clearly loves the eerie silence of the night and knows how to play the flute really well.

And that's when I decided to investigate one night. Because, well... My curiosity really got the best of me at this point.

Around one night, at midnight, obviously. Exactly the time where the Midnight Flute Player will show up in the darkness and play the same melody, I headed out from my house and searched around my hometown, Fortuna, to find that flute player everyone was talking about. I carried nothing from my house right when I got out because I figured that I could protect myself using my magic.

'They must be around here somewhere...' I thought to myself as I made my way roaming around the town, trying my best to silence my footsteps so as not to wake up the residents. That's when I hear the familiar melody playing from afar.

'There it is again! I need to check it out!'

I looked everywhere around town to find that mysterious figure. The houses, marketplace, and even the church. And yet, I found nothing.

"Strange... They're nowhere in this town... I need to check again"

And so I did. I checked everywhere for the second time.... And still nothing. The melody still plays though, still as loud but harmonious.

If they're nowhere in town, then I could only assume....

"Mitis Forest!"

Right after I said it, I instantly rushed over to Mitis Forest, the last location where I could assume the Midnight Flute Player's presence.

As soon as I arrived at the entrance to the forest, I spotted a figure sitting on a huge rock, playing the flute, with a cat sitting beside her. I couldn't exactly make out the full view of the two so I had to use my light powers to lighten up my path and view. I then slowly and carefully approached the two figures on the rock. I tried my best to make my steps still as silent as possible so as not to disturb them.

Eventually, I got several steps closer to the two figures but stopped upon realizing the identity of the cat. It had a mix of orange and blue colors and a simple black collar around its neck, still sleeping next to the player. The look of the cat invoked a feeling of familiarity.... I then checked at the flute player; they wore a blue jacket, indigo blue skirt with a red bow on the side, brown gloves, dark brown leggings and black, shin-high boots.

Out of the blue, the sound of the flute stopped abruptly. Did they know my presence? Crap, I didn't know they're sharp with even the slightest silence of any sound! Right as I was about to panic, a female voice suddenly called me out.

"I've been expecting you to find me..." She said as she took off her hood, revealing a girl with dark hair and brown eyes, turning to look at me as she smiled "Ren". I blinked a few times at the girl, baffled by the sudden reappearance of the familiar person I once knew since childhood. Then... Only a single word came out of my mouth...

"Kristalina?"
