CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
Alana
THE NEXT DAY
May
I brought Vero's dress over to her at Jasmine's house and I'm relieved that I did. I want to be mad at my mother for getting a divorce from my father. But Mami loves someone else and who am I to try to argue with her to take that from her? Even if that person she love is my soon to be father in law.
"Cesar should have just brought you as his date." Jasmine says to me as I help zip Vero into her gown. It fits perfectly since I adjusted it and the way the fabric flows off her body she looks like a goddess. Pregnant or not. I know Ruby would be drooling over her.
She thinks that he died in love with Olivia but I know my brother and he truly loved Vero because she showed him unconditional love. Olivia was proof to him that love existed but when met Vero? He knew that true love was real and he had found it. It's a shame my brother died so young but he was meant to live that little bit that was left of his life with her.
I look over at Jasmine as she's finishing the curls on her hair and I blink at her unamused. "Jasmine. I'm basically his mother. Would you bring your parent with you to prom?"
"My Papi used to have some great dance moves before his accident. So yes, I would bring my father as my date if he could still tear up the dance floor." Jasmine responds and it might be the most meaningful thing she's ever said.
"Well, I don't see myself tearing up any dance floors for a while. Maybe for the wedding but that's months away. I just hope Abuelita holds on for it. I went to see her this morning and she told me to fuck off and stop asking questions if I'm not going to smoke with her."
"An icon." Vero laughs. "Does my makeup look okay? I won't look washed out with flashback in pictures right?"
"Use a little more bronzer if you're that worried." I tell her with a smile. "But I think you look amazing. I'm proud of you... You've really turned yourself around."
She nods and her smile drops ever so slightly. "Ruby would have loved to see us get along."
"Maybe this was the only way." I turn to face Jasmine who's blowing on her finger that she just burnt on her curling iron. "Oh my- Jasmine, let me help."
I snatch the iron from her hand and finish off her hair. Feeling a little bit of pain in my back. Oscar told me I needed to start really taking it easy but I refuse to listen to him. I worked up until my water broke with Mia so I'll be damned if I'm not doing the same with this nameless baby.
He's been nameless since the day we found out he was a boy because we can't agree on a name. Oscar refuses to tell me names he likes because he knows I'm stuck on Adrian. I really like the name and he hates it with a passion. I'm starting to think he got bullied by a kid named Adrian as a child and that's why he hates the name.
"I think you're going to have your baby first." Jasmine says to me. "I know you're a few weeks apart but something tells me you're going first."
Vero nods. "Her bump dropped tremendously literally since yesterday."
"I am not popping this kid out until Oscar and I can agree on a name."
Jasmine snorts. "Yeah because your cookie is going to close itself off like a detoured road and not let that baby out until you and Spooky agree on a name. I thought you guys landed on a name? Aiden?"
"Adrian." I sigh. "No, just me. I like that name and Oscar gags when he hears it."
Vero pauses. "I'm naming the baby Ruben... Everyone tried to talk me out of it. But he's a piece of Ruby and if he couldn't meet his father I want him to carry his name. And his middle name will be my father's name. Even if he's mad at me... But he's really only mad because my mom is mad at me."
