chapter IX

The death of Queen Margret would come swift for James. In the middle night and I made it so that James would have to come to us. That was when I kill him. However I would have to wait for nightfall. It was dusk now and I was waiting for total darkness to come. Annika had spent most of the day in my bed. Her stomach pains faded and she ate with us. She seemed overly hungry as she had many plates of food for herself. We still had time before nightfall, so I asked her about her life before I met her.

“Where do I begin?” she asked.

“Let’s start at your first memory.”

She then told me that she was raised by an old woman named Rose, but Annika had been calling her “Mother”. She knew her father was James and whenever she saw him, she was greeted with no love from him. The only love she had was from a small orange kitten. She gave it food and water on a daily basis, but that didn’t stop from being beaten to death. It was James that was the one who did it. She was thirteen when she was told that her cat died, the same night James took her innocence. Being told that she was doing her duty, she did what she was told. After she was violated, she felt as if she was alone and unloved. The next morning she was then forced into training. She then spent the next three years doing brutal training and feeling unloved. She then let tears start to roll down her eyes as the memories came back to her.

One night she was then awoken by James and told to change into his soldiers black armor. She did as she was told and left in disguise in her father’s army. He then told her to come to his tent. He told her that they were planning on attacking at first dawn. He also gave her a warning.

“There will be a dragon. Stay away from that dragon.”

She only got one hour of sleep before she was awoken to fight. She then ran to fight anyone in battle, but only came across one person: Me. She then fought me and I knocked her out. She then woke up in a cell and saw me and my father. It was then she realized I was the prince. The rest was then where we met and that brought us to here. After the night of the ball, she wanted to repay me for the kindness I showed her. When I asked her to be my queen, she felt loved for the first time in her life.

“I’ll try to get an orange cat for you sometime.”

“I have Icestorm.”

“But I want you to have a cat that wasn’t taken.”

“What hasn’t he taken from me?”

“I know I have one thing that I have that he can’t.”

“Your love. He can’t steal that from me.”

“Thank you, Derek.

“Let me see what the market has.”

“This late at night? I do not think you will have much luck.”

“You are forgetting I’m the prince and think of it as an early wedding present. In the meantime, I want you to get a good night’s sleep. We don’t want you to feeling ill in the morning, do we?”

“No, we don’t.” she agreed, smiling.

“I’ll join you in a little bit.”

I then left and got my assassin outfit from its hidden place. I then met Valerio outside the kingdom. He then took off for James’s kingdom. All I had with me was my blade and a length of rope. Valerio landed on the top of James’s tower and silently killed Margret. I then dragged her out and hung her in front of the window for James to see. I then took one of James’s knives and stabbed a letter between her stomach and the guard of the knife.
