Under the shimmering glow of the chandeliers, Lucian and Selene stood side by side, the soft hum of conversation filling the grand hall. Lucian turned his head slightly, studying Selene with an almost unreadable expression.
"Are you hungry?" he asked, his voice low and smooth.
Selene glanced up at him, her delicate fingers brushing against the fabric of her dress. "A little," she admitted.
Lucian didn’t hesitate. He strode toward the dessert table, picking up a small plate with a perfectly crafted slice of cake. Without a word, he returned and held a forkful of the dessert to Selene’s lips.
"Eat," he instructed.
Selene’s cheeks flushed slightly, but she leaned forward, taking the bite he offered. The rich, velvety taste of chocolate melted on her tongue, and she smiled faintly.
"Good?" Lucian asked, his eyes never leaving hers.
She nodded. "Yes, very."
Lucian’s lips curled slightly in satisfaction, but then he exhaled, glancing towards the far end of the hall.
"I need to go to the bathroom," he murmured, shifting closer. "Do you want to come with me?"
Selene blinked at him, tilting her head slightly. "That… wouldn’t be necessary. I’ll be fine here."
Lucian studied her for a moment before sighing. "Alright. But listen to me carefully—don’t take anything from anyone while I’m gone. Understand?"
Selene nodded obediently. "I understand."
Lucian reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear before stepping away.
"I won’t be long," he assured her before disappearing into the crowd.
Selene stood still, suddenly feeling awkward amidst the sea of unfamiliar faces. She glanced around, searching for Evelyn, but she was nowhere to be found.
Just as she was about to shift uncomfortably, a waiter approached her, holding out a sealed bottle of water on a silver tray.
"Madam, a drink for you," he said politely.
Selene hesitated for a second, but then she remembered that Lucian had said he’d take long. He probably thought she might get thirsty and asked someone to bring her water.
Smiling slightly in relief, she reached out and took the bottle. "Thank you."
She twisted the cap open and took a sip. The cool liquid slid down her throat, refreshing her. Without thinking much of it, she drank the rest of the water.
From the corner of the hall, hidden behind elegantly dressed guests, Layla watched with a victorious smirk.
She had done it.
The drug—a powerful aphrodisiac —was already working its way through Selene’s body. Soon, the real show would begin.
Selene’s fingers twitched. A strange warmth spread through her veins, an uncomfortable heat settling in her chest.
Something wasn’t right.
Her vision blurred slightly, and she pressed a hand to her forehead. A sudden wave of dizziness hit her, and she took a step back, gripping the edge of the table for support.
What… what was happening?
Her breathing grew uneven. A strange, unexplainable desire burned through her body, her skin feeling hypersensitive to the fabric of her dress.
Selene’s entire body burned. Her pulse raced, her breath came in shallow pants, and the world around her blurred at the edges.
This… this wasn’t normal.
