“Did you hear Ali Jita’s song about us?” Sameerah whispered to Aminu who nodded with a faint smile playing on his lips. SHe leaned closer to him once she saw that he wanted to say something and laughed when he said, “I was just as shocked as you are when I heard it. But Ladi says that’s how he gets paid. I’ve asked Ladi to ask for an invoice from his people so we can pay him and we can at least use the song.”
“But, all those things he said? About us being so in love? And our love being legendary? Where did he get that from?” Sameerah saw the moment Aminu could no longer hold in his laughter and laughed loudly with him. She wheezed for a good thirty seconds before she choked but before she coughed further, he was opening a bottle of water for her to take a sip from. She didn’t need it, but she looked him in the eye and let him hold the bottle while she drank from it.
She blinked at him once and he took the bottle from her lips, twisted the cap and put it away. His hands felt his pockets until his left one returned with a white handkerchief that was embroidered with his name on it. She patted her lips gently and held the handkerchief in her hands.
“Thank you.” She said with a slight smile before turning to look at what was going on in front of them, the bridesmaids were getting coordinated by the MC to play a fierce game of who knew the couple better. Sameerah sent a glance Aminu’s way and caught him watching her, she cleared her throat and said, “I thought this game would be reserved for our intimate dinner tomorrow?” Aminu shrugged.
“Bride and groom, please break up your discussion and come sit here, you have the rest of your life to chitchat.” Aminu chuckled and helped her to her feet, watching gently as she descended the low stairs to the lower part of the podium where the MC and the bridal party were waiting.
“This game is simple! I ask a question, the bridesmaids and groomsmen guess the answer, you answer, and we tally the marks for a gift. Are we on board?” Sameerah watched as Aminu nodded and agreed as well, he helped her take a seat in her designated chair and sat few inches away from her where his groomsmen had crowded around.
“Who said 'I Love You' First.” Everyone on the bridal party, including Hafsah whom Sameerah knew was aware of the truth raised cards that had ‘Groom’ written on it to her surprise. She looked around and shook her head firmly when she met Aminu’s eyes. He winked at her to see the game through to its end.
“Madam.” The MC referring to Hafsah, “Why are you so fixated on your answer?” Hafsah’s laughter filled the room as the DJ had lowered the music to the bare minimum.
“I know Mimi. She would never say it first even if she feels so first.” The Mc raised a brow in question but turned to Aminu who ‘confirmed’ Hafsah’s claims, making everyone on the air conditioned hall to hoot and clap.
“Who is most likely to lose their wallet?” None of the bridesmaids or the groomsmen moved and Sameerah wondered how they knew any of these things, she realized though that Aminu had brought some of his friends and her crowd of five bridesmaids consisted of people she had known since as early as secondary school.
“None of them?” The microphone was passed to Aminu’s friend Hammad who slowly said, “Aminu is the most level headed person I know. He double checks everything, that’s why I trust him as a politician but most importantly I know he will be a great husband.” Sameerah’s eyes weren’t on the speaker anymore, she looked at Aminu and wondered how else he would be a better person than he had already been.
“The same is for Sameerah as well, I trust them for one another both as partners and as future parents because they have turned out to be great individuals. I cannot wait to see them parent a little one.” Sameerah sent her friend, Sumayyah who has spoken a fiery glance that had her chuckling and handing back the microphone.
