Tianni, a dedicated ER nurse who thrives in chaos, and Treyvon or as the streets know him as "Ghost", a feared gangster with a reputation that keeps most people at a distance.
When Ghost is rushed into her hospital one night with a gunshot wound, T...
"I appreciate your understanding," Mr. Reynolds said with a nod.
"I really do. And hey, you get to be around the babies. Could be a good change of pace, huh?"
She managed a small smile. "Yeah... that sounds nice."
Mr. Reynolds patted her shoulder gently before walking away.
As soon as he turned the corner, Tianni's shoulders slumped, the frustration she'd been holding in finally releasing.
Turning on her heel, she headed to the locker room to grab her things.
She was still boiling inside, her mind racing over Shamika's audacity.
Playing with her job?
Really?
Just as she was about to enter the locker room, she ran into Yasmin, her best friend and fellow nurse.
"Girl, where you goin'? You leaving already?" Yasmin asked, her curly ponytail bouncing as she tilted her head.
Tianni rolled her eyes, her irritation evident.
"Girl, I just got sent to the maternity floor because Ghost's baby momma don't think I'm doing a good enough job with him, apparently. But we both know that's not true."
Yasmin's face twisted in disbelief.
"Oh, girl, please. She know damn well! You want me to beat her ass? You know she stay round the way where my brother be at."
Tianni laughed despite her frustration, shaking her head.
"No, Yas. See, that's why you stay having no nails. You always somewhere fighting. You need to stop."
They both burst out laughing.
Yasmin feigned shock, her mouth dropping open.
"I can't help it, bestie. You know these hoes be irking me real fast. But I'm better now. I ask if they cool first... then swing. You remember nursing school? I used to just see them and put belt to ass—no talking."
Tianni's shoulders shook with laughter.
"Girl, don't remind me. You the reason they put up that strike system. They were sick of you."
Yasmin waved a hand dismissively.
"I brought the fun there. They were too strict. But I'll cover your rounds until you get back and send you updates about Mr. Man, too."
Tianni sucked her teeth, shaking her head.
"Girl, I do not need no updates about that man, but okay. I'll text you later." She waved goodbye, making her way to the elevator.
Just as she was about to step in, she nearly bumped into Kevin, her ex from nursing school.
He looked at her with those familiar brown eyes, a cautious smile on his face.
"Ti, hey... can we talk for a sec?"
She hesitated, glancing at the time before nodding. "Yeah, what's up?"
Kevin looked down, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
"I've been hearing things around the floor... about you getting close to the guy in Room 214. I just... wanted to check on you. Make sure you're good."
Tianni's eyes narrowed, her posture stiffening.
"Close to him? Kevin, I don't have anything going on with him. And even if I did, that wouldn't be anybody's business but mine."
Kevin held his hands up defensively.
"I'm just looking out for you, Ti. I know you're a good person. I don't want you getting hurt. I've heard real bad things about him. I grew up with guys like him. They're no good."
Tianni crossed her arms, her expression hardening.
"I appreciate your concern, but that's not your job anymore, Kevin. And besides, I'm being transferred to maternity, so you don't have to worry about it anymore."
The elevator chimed, the doors sliding open.
Tianni stepped inside, pressing the button as she looked back at Kevin, who watched her with a mixture of concern and longing.
As the doors closed, she let out a heavy sigh, leaning back against the cool metal.
It was only her first year here, and already she was learning how complicated this job—and the people around it—could be.
She closed her eyes, preparing herself to start fresh on the maternity floor, away from Ghost and his messy baby mama, and away from Kevin and his misplaced feelings.
But as the elevator descended, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was far from over.
